WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

I just realized that all of my favourite Canadian songs are commercial sing-along hits. Except for one hardcore track that snuck in! I feel so girly!

Building a Mystery - Sarah McLachlan

Black Black Heart - David Usher

Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk - Rufus Wainwright

Mushaboom - Feist

I Would Die for You - Jann Arden

The Grace - Neverending White Lights

No Transitory - Alexisonfire

Perfect - Danny Michel

Head Over Feet - Alanis Morissette

Walking With a Ghost - Tegan and Sara

Honourable mention (because it's a cover):

Cry Me a River - The Cliks

For a real blast of Canadian loudness, you'll have to check out Robin's list here:

The combined force of our music collections is awesome!

I think that creating an American playlist for Independence Day is too big a task for me. Happy 4th!

I was hoping someone would do this! I'm a big Canada-phile, not just for hockey but for music and radio and books as well. Kind of odd for an Irish dude, but there you go.

Loving the selections - can I suggest the Weakerthans, Ohbijou and Dala, too? And 'Gassy Jack' by the Evaporators may well be one of the catchiest songs I've heard in the past year.

Um... I should have added that it's a nice country, too... :-)

John, your tastes are cooler than mine. I probably should have added Stars, Arcade Fire, You Say Party! We Say Die!, etc. to give my list more credibility. So there's really such a thing as a Canada-phile? :)

Yep. became interested in the country in school. Fell in love with it on a trip to Toronto a couple o' years back. And lately I've been listening to CBC Radio online, hence the catching up on Canadian music. CBC Radio 3's great for the Canadian Indie stuff, but I love Vinyl Cafe, too.

BTW, don't forget Great Big Sea, so as to take in the Maritimes!

^I always thought it was funny you were so into hockey, having heard through the grapevine you're actually in Ireland. I'm also surprised to hear Canadaphiles exist, lol.

Great list, darmuzz. Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk sound great, love that song!!

So what prompted you to make your list Dar? It's pretty darn good!

Here in Nova Scotia, Great Big Sea is terribly over-exposed but I do admit to having a soft spot for them. "Lukey's Boat," anyone?

Brittany, I don't like either cigarettes or chocolate milk, but those jelly beans, oh yeah!

August, it was Canada Day on the 1st! And I wuz sharing my Canadian music lore with Robin.

Gotta throw in C.G.I.T (canadian girls in training) by Chixdiggit. I also might add that here in Minnesota I celebrated Canada Day by having a cookout for my wife (who is canadian) and I also made poutine.

I know em all, every time I go to canada I end up spending a good two hours walking through a grocery store just looking at the things you have there that we dont in the states. When I come home I always bring a good supply of Kinders Surprises as well as a 12 pack of pink Crush cream soda.
