WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT

Darmuzz’s Behind-the-Times Year-End List

Posted about 1 year ago
I like to buy albums I’ve been anticipating, or “preview” albums selectively…I find if I download everything that catches my ear, the music doesn’t get a fair chance because I’m too overwhelmed. So about 25 new albums were added to my collection this year. I thought about making a Top Ten list, but realistically, I was still catching up on 2006 albums all year, and even some 2005s. So here are the Top 15 albums I loved this year:2007 Releases1. Tegan and Sara – The Con2. The Cliks – Snakehouse3. The Klaxons – Myths of the Near Future4. The Fiery Furnaces – Widow City5. Art Brut – It’s a Bit Complicated2006 Releases I Bought in 20071. The Dresden Dolls – Yes Virginia2. My Chemical Romance – Black Parade3. Amy Winehouse – Back to Black4. Regina Spektor – Begin to Hope5. Cansei de ser Sexy – Cansei de ser Sexy2005 Releases I Loved This Year:1. Death Cab for Cutie – Plans2. Bright Eyes – I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning3. Mew – And the Glass Handed Kites4. Sufjan Stevens – (Come On Feel the) Illinoise5. Imogen Heap – Speak for YourselfAnd finally, like Tybees, I feel the need to acknowledge the songs that were stuck in my brain this year:My Fave Songs of 2007:1. Cry Me A River – The Cliks2. The Hives – Tick Tick Boom3. Golden Skans – The Klaxons4. You Don’t Know What Love Is – The White Stripes5. Tell Me What We’re Gonna Do Now – Joss StoneThank you to the Moggers who helped me find these – you know who you are :)

  1. matt cleveland says I like your categories. It's so hard to give albums the time they deserve in one year, especially those that come out later in the year...

  2. Blue Meenie says Nice post darmuzz. I too have to re-listen to older great albums that I'm still absorbing, although DCFC has been played A LOT :))) I still have to check out Art Brut. It seems to be on many "best of 2007" lists.

  3. Torch says Nice lists! Don't feel late, I'm still working on my "Not a Top Ten" list for 2007.

  4. kat3260 says Just got into The Cliks recently... I suck at making lists of this sort, so bravo to you!

  5. Dale says Heh, I'm just getting around to collecting top 10's so I added your top 5 right in.

  6. darmuzz says Thanks for stopping by, everybody...I am honoured that you took the time to read my list during this time of list overload!

  7. Marigold says I love this type of list. It is actually my preferred style of list. It is more realistic to the way the common music nerd consumes music. There are a lot of bands that I discovered this year from all over years past. I love your list! (I am actually surprised there is not more louder music on it)

  8. anirtak says Great! I just found The Cliks and think they're very good. You might like Jenny Owens "Gettin Hot In Here" cover, I might have the title of that song wrong. Anyhoo nice list!

  9. debi says I love seeing everyone's top lists for the year - but have hesitated to do one since I tend NOT to be the type to buy music the minute its available. Until finding Mog a year ago, 80% of my music collection was reggae, Grateful Dead or Southern rock. ..and the year didn't matter. Before the year is out I'm going to sort through my most listened to in 2007 (no matter what year it was produced!)

  11. darmuzz says Thanks all, I am relieved to hear I'm not the only one who is back-tracking every year! Marigold, realistically I do listen to a lot of loud music - my favourite this year was Blood Brothers - Young Machetes - 2006 (have now found out it was their last album before splitting up). Also went to see Billy Talent, Rise Against, Alexisonfire, Cancer Bats, and Comeback Kid live. Anirtak, thanks for the recommendation - I will look it up!

  13. FluxCapacitor says Great idea to chop the list up, 'cos of course none of us listened to 07 tunes exclusively. Good to see Timbaland/Timberlake's music getting some love on Mog. I haven't heard "Tegan and Sara – The Con", so I'm intrigued - thanks, Darla.

  14. Bartleby says A very inspiring list - the best music is the one which stays with us. Thanks for the recommendation. - I've always admired people who have discriminating yet varied enough tastes and can draw up articulate lists of their likes (and less liked).
