Metal Top 10 for 2007

Posted about 1 year ago
Exclaim! magazine has printed its top 10 albums in its "Aggressive Tendencies" (metal and metal-ish) category. It's getting hard to tell the difference between metal and hardcore - not that I feel the need to.They are:Baroness - Red AlbumMunicipal Waste - The Art of PartyingThe Locust - New ErectionsThe Dillinger Escape Plan - Ire WorksBetween the Buried and Me - ColorsEvery Time I Die - The Big DirtyPig Destroyer - Phantom LimbGraf Orlock - Destination Time TomorrowTorche - In ReturnJesu - ConquerorI couldn't imagine that a new year could surpass the end of 06 when Mastodon, Killswitch Engage, Shadows Fall and Lamb of God all had new albums.I took a long breather from metal and am now happy to return. Thanks to Moggers Robin H and River Lethe for helping me back into the metal fold!

  2. Marigold says I just bought the 10" vinyl release for In Return from Torche. I should have it any day. I got the clear one with the black "planats" on it. I am so excited! Jesu's - Conqueror is pretty good as well and worth checking out.

  6. River Lethe says Ah, glad to finally have some more company on MOG! Yeah, that's a pretty solid list. Most of those are on mine so far. Marigold, that's an awesome vinyl set! Metal and hardcore is one of the genres that seems to release a lot of current albums on vinyl these days. I may have to get a turntable soon.

  7. River Lethe says By the way, don't forget dj ivi, who has eclectic tastes, but often MOGs on some heavier fare.

  8. Augusts1 says Erm, that's some pretty obvious "snake" symbolism in that photo you posted. Feeling phallic Dar? ahahahahahah

  9. Alien8n says How can you be an ex-metalhead? lol I've been a metalhead since the 80's myself, but continued right through the 90's and past 2000. Still listening to all my Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath, but mellowed out with some new style punk and rock. Love Killswitch Engage, Dragonforce and the like but I have to admit I only recognise 1 band on the Top 10 list...

  10. darmuzz says River Lethe & Marigold, yeah, I don't buy new vinyl but I still have old stuff (like a DiAnno picture disc, LOL!) August, ha, those guys have phallic wrapped around themselves, how's that for homo-erotic! Alien8n, good point, I did not stop liking old-school metal like Maiden, Priest and Metallica, but did not discover much new metal for a while. Generally like "hard" music - metal, hardcore, punk.

  11. River Lethe says Below is Decibel's list, and Revolver hasn't named an album of the year yet, but I bet it'll be Dillinger Escape Plan. The Decibel list has a ton of stuff on it I haven't even heard. Keep in mind I have another, non-metal list too, lest I be called closed-minded: http://mog.com/River_Lethe/blog_post/124317 From decibelmagazine.com: http://www.decibelmagazine.com/features/jan2008/top40.aspx Where nobody gives a flying fuck about In Rainbows This is my third year of watching Albert run around the office with printouts of the writers’ Top 40 lists, agonizing over what belongs where in the Dechelon and why. He puts what could be considered an unhealthy deal of thought and care into assembling this thing, but fuck all that. My favorite part is when he finally shows me his tentative Top 40, which he’s holding like the missing Grail Diary pages in Last Crusade, and I get to say shit like, “Oh, so Rosetta are thirteen albums better than Trap Them. SUPER,” loud enough to deeply annoy the Rosetta fans sitting beside me. (My second favorite part is making fun of the writers’ “left-field” choices, particularly the ones best fit for Decibot consumption.) All of which is, obviously, the sort of thing you’ll be doing as soon as you finish reading this. I don’t think this year’s slate will be remotely embarrassing five years down the road, and looking back to the 2005 list, I can still get behind everything (except number 6 and 25; yikes). So, on your marks, get set, bitch. It’s the Top 40 Records of 2007. 1.Pig Destroyer - Phantom Limb 2.Watain - Sworn to the Dark 3.The Dillinger Escape Plan - Ire Works 4.Jesu - Conqueror 5.Baroness - The Red Album 6.
