I always thought the Symphony of Destruction was built around a pretty kick-ass riff. Ok, fuck it, top five in no particular order:

    1. Megadeth - Symphony of Destruction
    2. Nirvana - School
    3. Modest Mouse - A Different City (Intro riff)
    4. Big Black - Power of Independent Trucking
    5. Led Zepplin - Heartbreaker (intro riff)

As you hinted at, this list is only valid fopr the split second it takes to hit the "publish" button.

Not really a 'top' list... more like a 'off the top of the head' list:

    Led Zeppelin - Levee Breaks
    Nine Inch Nails - Closer
Pink Floyd - Learning to Fly
    Outkast - Bombs Over Baghdad
    Tenpenny Joke - She
Kings of Leon - Knocked Up

    I guess miine would be

    Tush-- ZZ Topp

    Blue Suede Shoes- Elvis Presley

    Johnny B Goode- Chuck Berry

    OverUnderSidewaysDown- Yardbirds

    War Pigs- Black Sabbath

    Seven Nation Army- White Stripes

    Paint It Black- Rolling Stones

Mostly because my 11yr old seems to be riff driven on his music selections

after listening to white stripes today I also must add a track to my list. Hardest button to button.

it's kinda hard to figure out what exactly makes a riff catchy. I mean it's not one thing it's a super special combination of elements that all have to come together to make a really catchy riff. also catchyness is completely a matter of taste and personal like. It's hard to pin down and thus it's hard to write a catchy riff.
