what does it take for a great album?

Posted over 5 years ago
lately it seems that all of the new groups i find arent able to make a whole record of great material...there will be 4 or 5 tracks(maybe) that are sweet, but as a whole the album doesnt stand on its own. For instance, the new Cat power album has some great songs on it (notably the first 3 tracks), but loses me every time midway through; though the tail end of the album gets closer to the right track. Not that the middle of the album is crap but by comparison falls short. Another album that I have issue with is 'Lets get out of this country' by Camera Obscura. Again, some great, sweet, musically interesting songs and then a load of filler! Its a shame when you can listen to an album and say 'wow, that song formulaic crap filler B.S., is this what i payed for?' Maybe it is. Camera Obscura, while being a good band, doesnt strike me as a band for the ages. They have good songs and bad songs, so they will end up being a mixtape kind of band for me. I would still like to see them live though. So for all that venting, and for anyonne who has read this far, here are some somewhat recent albums that i think are great from cover to cover: Massive Attack : Mezzanine The Books : The Lemon of Pink (really any album by them) My Morning Jacket : Z Four Tet : Rounds Wilco : Yankee Hotel Foxtrot The Notwist : Neon Golden Ya and if you have a problem I will more than gladly defend any of these albums ;)

  1. supertopsecret says I totally agree with you about all these new releases being half assed. I have been listening to a lot of music from the 50's - 80's and found that I like more old stuff than new. Marvin Pontiac - The Legendary Marvin Pontiac - Greatest Hits (is fabulous)

  2. supertopsecret says Oh and I totally dig all those albums you posted. Greatness. If you like pinback, listen to Optiganally Yours, although you probably already have.

  3. EmergencyTrap says You're right, not many people bother to make great albums anymore. I guess people assume that since we're in the age of the mix, there's no need to put out a cohesive, solid album. I like your picks. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is classic.
