MUSIC SIGNPOSTS ON THE WEB'S LONELY ROAD

Artist:
Album: VH1 Music First: Behind The Music

After spending a good hour, and a good $45, on some much-needed Halloween decorations, I found myself driving home in the pouring rain.

On the stereo was a random mix CD that was made for a road trip to Chicago two years ago. I don't think I had listened to it since.

All of a sudden, this song came on and before I knew it I was singing along at the top of my lungs with a smile on my face. I can't explain why or what the purpose was or how I even knew all the words. But I do know that it was the most happy I've felt for months. Who knew?

The last time I remember this song in my life was about seven years ago, while working in a "Christmas warehouse" (we put together pretty display gifts for retail stores). Someone had it on a random hits CD and we listened to this song late one afternoon. I was in the small, cramped, warehouse kitchen cleaning all of our coffee mugs and all of a sudden I hear a dozen people on the floor singing along.

I guess it's just that kind of song.

If your life was a movie would that have been a montage moment or a bonding moment between a bunch of wacky characters, did anybody jump on a table and start dancing? Was their a heavy guy shaking his belly and dancing around with a broomstick while wearing a Santa hat?

Sounds like a good time anyhow!

I am a big fan of Jefferson Starship (especially the album Freedom at Point Zero) but could not really get into "We Built This City," when Jefferson Starship morphed into Starship. I remember seeing an interview with China Wing Kantner, the former MTV VJ, where she said that the dispute between Paul Kantner and Grace Slick, her parents, at the time this song came out was far worse on her than when her parents divorced.

Anyway, when Starship was touring to support this album, one of my brothers who I did not share much of my musical tastes wanted to go to the concert (I used to borrow my other brother's Freedom at Point Zero 8-track until I bought my own copy on vinyl). So we drove into Manhattan and it was an AMAZING concert. Mickey Thomas' voice was incredible live, possibly the best live voice I may have ever heard (save Natalie Merchant). Thanks for reminding me of the video though -- I still think Grace Slick looks unintentionally scary in the video.
