WE DO THE MASHED POTATO AND THE FUNKY CHICKEN

Saliva, Drowning Pool, and Deepfield in Concert - Part 3, Saliva

Posted about 1 year ago
After another break to move DP's equipment off the stage and redo the sound check, the headliners, Saliva, took the stage. You could argue at least that their musicians were the most energetic of the three, with the guitarists running back and forth across the stage constantly. Josey Scott came out in a rather ridiculous get-up and face paint, but hey, you're the rock star, do whatever you want I guess. Evidently, Saliva has a much larger catalog than I realize, because I didn't recognize a fair number of the songs. They also mixed up the setlist to span their career, surprisingly including both "Superstar" and "Superstar II" (I always thought having a "Superstar II" was ridiculous anyway). They did a long breakdown in the middle of "Doperide" to get the crowd to sing call-and-response on several well-known songs, including "Shout" and "Another Brick In The Wall." Surprisingly, they didn't include "Survival of the Sickest," which was the only single I really knew of from that album. After a reasonable set, they left the stage, and then with some egging on from the house DJ, they came back onto the stage to perform "Always" and close with "Your Disease." Their show was as tight as you would expect from a band with as much experience as Saliva, but despite the bouncing around of the guitarists I still feel like they weren't pouring out as much energy as you might expect. Then again, maybe it's just that I was standing closer to the back of the floor at the time because I was trying not to go deaf...So yeah, I don't know if it's the getting older, the getting progressively more frustrated with getting covered in smoke, being jaded by listening to so much music/seeing lots of good shows, seeing the stupid fratboys with their popped-collar pink polos at hard rock/metal shows, or what, but I'm starting to feel like I'm just getting too old for this. (I'm also frustrated at the cost of some shows--next month, Three Days Grace, Seether, and Hurt are playing a show about an hour away, and I'd kinda like to see it, but I don't think they're worth the $35 + Ticketmaster fees + travel.) But I guess I'll keep going to them anyway...
