MUSIC SIGNPOSTS ON THE WEB'S LONELY ROAD

(173)

I was just going through some tunes I want to put on M, which I should have up by late afternoon today (Friday). Harry Nilsson blows me away, his music is all over the board. I'm going to crap out and not do him any justice here. In case you don't know his name he was very popular during the '60s and '70s and this is just a breezy little song from what some consider to be the first remixed album "Aerial Pandemonium Ballet".

If I've managed to intrigue you in any way, check him out on Wiki: Harry Nilsson

Great songwriter & artist. I think I have his "Nilsson Schmilson" album on vinyl somewhere. Maybe not. I know I heard that album & liked it. Shit, now I'm gonna have to look through my lps! Damn you Dach(shaking fist in air)!

Harry Nilsson... really great and this song is perfect - just blew away those tiny bits of sleep stuck to my eyelids (usually make me look like a zombie ‘til noon).

So, now that you've finally roused yourself - remember why you wanted to sleep in in the first place?

Love Harry! Great, unorthodox songwriter - always did it his own way!

There are many, many more great tunes from this guy. John Lennon loved him so much he was considered the 5th Beatle.

All these examples go to show you what I mean about how all over the board this guy was. The fact that he would never stick to a distinct style was actually his downfall with the public. Every album he did was very different from the previous.

He unfortunately died almost penniless after a finacial advisor he trusted stole every cent he had. In 1994 at the age of 54 he had to convince the record companies to allow him to do a "best of" album to help him pay for some medical bills that were piling up. The night it was completed he died of a heart attack.

You know Dach, those last two are very nostalgic for me. They were big radio hits the summer I was 17. We were working the local tobacco fields sweatin' and chopin' and lathin' and waitin' for Harry on the radio all day long in the hot sun. SMACK! If you weren't lookin', you'd get nailed in the side of the head with a big fat juicy tobacco worm! The evenings were for stockin' up the car with a case of little kings and other, more electric tunes. But Harry was the day's delight and remains, for me, an icon of that age. Thanks Harry!!

No retrospective on this guy would be complete without this emotional holiday classic (seriously, this time)

Close. Ohio. Back then, they still grew the stuff 'round here. Not now. No worries about the memory, it's the weekend.

Your post has proven so popular Dach,it's great to know so many people are interested in Nilsson! Here's a Harry fact. As creative a genius as he was, the song he is most known for was not penned by him.

Would you believe -Badfinger! (nice vid, by the way - liked that a lot!)

Really!! The Stalker song's not his? It's not his (I just checked allmusic, I had to see for myself) but neither is "Everybody's Talking" thats by Fred Neil. Huh!!

David, are there bats in your belfry? 'Cos I'm seeing some wing-type shadows on that face. You're not hanging upside down from the rafters are you? Do you have the overwhelming urge to listen to Nilsson's "Daybreak"? ;)

dachmo says:

What are you saying Daybreak is a good song, I think I'm lost?

I am a wee bit batty tho,

Please I need some mo explanations sister!

Posted
| Permalink

Batty is good. Bloodsucking, mmm, could come in handy when one has suffered a snake bite!

Daybreak is from "Son of Dracula"

Here comes the daylight It's makin' me sad Here comes the sunlight Makin' me sad Had a good time last night Best I ever had Here come the sunshine That's makin' me sad So sad, so sad, so sad, so sad

Here come the daybreak It's bringin' me pain It's causin' me heartache I wish it would rain Had a good time last night Just me and my friends But here come the daylight And now it's the end Oh no, oh no, oh no, oh no

I think that whole album concerns his predilections to the white powder. In a round about way, or at least that's the way I always saw it?

Sounds like your a Harry fan ? how's your belfry doing this friday night?

I'm not as closely acquainted with him as you are, but I am a fan. Pretty amazing array of work.

My belfry is doing well, thanks, albeit after a bumpy day. I'm filling up on a little blood o' the bull, if you get my meaning!

Harry Nilsson is a great musician indeed. It's funny you should mention him because not long ago a friend of mine mentioned to me something about a documentary about Harry Nilsson. Its apt title: "Who Is Harry Nilsson (And Why Is Everybody Talkin' About Him?) - imdb entry here
