1980 saw the release of _"Underwater Moolight"_ from the soon to be very influential British power-house of a band, _
The Soft Boys_. Robyn Hitchcock on vocals, Andy Metcalf on bass (would leave in '79 to join "Squeeze" then joined up with "XTC" in '85), Kimberley Rew on guitars (later would form "Katrina and the Waves") and Morris Windsor on drums (played later with "Thompson Twins"). Forming in '76 they would release an EP in '77, followed by their first LP in '79, "Can of Bees". But the release of their second, and last, album would receive the most attention over the years. The majority of the original band would later join up again to record under the name "Robyn Hitchcock and the Egyptians". After the 2001 re-issue of this album the Soft Boys reunited to tour and subsequently record another album for 2002.

Excellent record. And good work on filling the gap on Soft Boys. I don't think anybody had posted about them before.

Liking these songs alot, thanks for posting them. Was wondering where Robyn got his start.

Wow, this post has SO many connections to music I own, but I am unfamiliar with The Soft Boys. Robyn Hitchcock? I own one LP by him and it's not to my tastes. I suspect the second track "Insanely Jealous" is full of Hitchcock. I really love that first track, though. Kimberly Rew? I own one of his CDs, which has only 3 tracks surviving on my iPod - not a good sign. I forgot he had anything to do with Katrina. And Squeeze? One of my faves. Maybe I should cherry-pick some Soft Boys from iTunes.

An excellent album; have it in the collection, and still enjoy listening to these guys!

Great Post! My introduction to Robyn Hitchcock was through some excellently priced cassette tapes at my local used record store. I used to rock out Eye in my old Super Beetle. I enjoyed his strange lyrics and off key singing. I always had planned on checking out Soft Boys, but other albums seemed more important at the time. Now I want those re-releases!
A Katrina and the Waves connection? Ugh! That song may has been a pox upon the past 25 years of movies (Walking on Sunshine). Although I have often admitted that if I had written only one song to be remembered by people, it would be that one, because just about every montage in a movie in the 80's was set to that song. I hope the payday was great.

Many I love Robyn Hitchcock. Soft Boys too. Thanks for posting. There's a fan that works at my local library because they have 6 Robyn Hitchcock albums and 2 or 3 Soft Boys albums to check out for free. I totally got a lesson there. Thanks for posting the tracks. Everyday needs some of this.
