A Cosmic Coincidence

In a past life (ie: three whole years ago) I used to frequent this bar in the city (Manhattan) called Milanos on Houston street. One of the last vestiges of New Yorks "Bowery Bars", an old man bar as I call them and my absolute favourite place to be. It's been around since the 1800's and is famous for being as wide as your average hallway. I had been a regular at this bar for almost 17 years and during that time grew to know a group of people not unlike here on MOG. It's because of this bar I met local artists (it's on the edge of SoHo and NoLIta), musicians, carpenters, firemen, writers, a few girlfriends and quite a lot of "characters". One of which was a gentlemen named Dick Shea. Dick ran a dance studio on 14th street, himself not much of a dancer but more of a party thrower. Dick threw some pretty major parties at his studio for almost any occasion and all of them were always a complete blast.

Every year after Thanksgiving Dick would become Santa Clause and was actually hired by the Manhattan Mall as their official Santa for kids to line up for and have their pictures taken with as they told him their Christmas wishes. A local NY listings magazine (Time Out NY) one year profiled him and a few other NYC Santas and sent him through a couple of photo sessions, the photo above is one that appeared in the magazine as well as another one with his sleeve rolled up flexing his muscles. Last year I spent a good portion of 2 weeks searching the web for one of these two photos and I turned up zilch. No leads. So I gave up looking. Two days after I thought I exhausted all means of finding him online in his Santa suit I got a Merry Christmas note from Andrea (Bloodtea here on Mog) dropped in my Multiply.com Guestbook and in it was this very picture and a short and sweet holiday wish.

I freaked out.

I had told no one of my search for this photo and she had no idea that the Santa in this photo had any meaning to me. It might have been one of the better gifts I got last year.

One of my best memories of my friend, Mr. Shea, was of his love of this song. That and his love of good tequila.

Cheers to you Andrea and cheers to the magic of Santa himself.

Joy & Sorrow

Joy!

Red buttons are GO!

Thanks to all the MOG Techies who worked endlessly so that I too might mog today.

Sorrow.

Took my father to the emergency room this morning and stayed with him until the doctors gave him enough morphine to ease his pain.

My mothers oldest friend unexpectedly passed away over the weekend, I took the phonecall from her daughter earlier this evening and found a way to relay the information as gently as possible.

If anybody has a "Knock-Knock" joke I sure can use one tonight.

________________________

(Denison Witmer is an indie singer-songwriter from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. His first release, in 1995, was a cassette entitled My Luck, My Love. He has since released five LPs; a cover album (Recovered); two EPs; and an LP with The River Bends—a side project consisting of members of the Philadelphia-based alt-country band One Star Hotel. Witmer's most recent album, Are You A Dreamer?, produced by Don Peris of The Innocence Mission and featuring Sufjan Stevens, received acclaim, including good reviews from Pitchfork Media and Entertainment Weekly. Witmer and Stevens appeared on Rosie Thomas's 2007 album These Friends of Mine. Witmer toured with Rosie Thomas in support of that album.

Witmer's style has been described as "neo-folk." He has also been compared to 1970s-era singer-songerwriters, including Cat Stevens and Nick Drake. Witmer's lyrics are poetic and thoughtful; his guitar work, while simple-sounding, relies on complex fingerpicking. He's a vegetarian.)

Great album, by the way.

Mog problems have left me out in the cold

I would love to read all your posts and listen to all your music but while I am now getting your post notifications I am now suffering from insufferably long page uploads and 2 second bursts of music followed by 15 seconds of silence whenever I try to listen to a red button, videos seem okay though. I'm afraid I'll be looking on from the sidelines until the rest of these Mog-bugs are fixed.

Richard Driver

I'm relatively new to the world of driving. Because of requirements for college I wasn't able to take driver's ed in high school until the last semester of my last year. All of my friends by this point were already driving so i was never want for a ride, anywhere. Soon I headed off to college and subsequently the next 18 years of my life in New York City. To backtrack a bit, on October 31st 1991 I finally got around to taking the road test and yes, I passed. The next time I found myself in command of an automobile was 16 years and 48 days later.

During that down time, all I had to do was every 5 years or so I'd spend an afternoon with the fine folks at the DMV, pay a fee, smile for the camera and my license would be renewed. The last time I renewed my license, at the age of 36, I laughed realizing that I had just been given the ok by the state of New York to do something I actually had only spent a combined total of maybe 90 minutes ever doing and the last time I had done it was well over a decade and a half ago.

Needless to say when I did start driving last December, at the age of 37, I would find myself gripped in fear of a metal and glass strewn, fiery death. Driving the half mile to the local supermarket was an ordeal that would take me most of the day to work up the nerve to do. Visions of overturned SUV's with soccer mom's laying bloodied on the asphalt while their children wandered the scene all broken and cut up was all I could imagine. Was that worth the sale on a ten-pack of tuna fish, no, but I'd do it anyway. With my hands clutched tightly around the wheel, radio off and my predetermined plot of winding, hardly used backroads I'd make my way to the Stop & Shop, grab my tinned albacore and get my ass home, carnage free.

Jump ahead 11 months to see our hero kindly allowing strangers on the parkways to merge in front of him, see him parallel park on busy town streets, see him doing 80 down the highway while looking for a radio station, see him screaming at a "fucktard" for not properly utilizing a directional signal, see him speed his vehicle through a yellow light because he's got somewhere more important to be.

I tell this little story of mine to remind people that no matter how confident you get behind the wheel, no matter how good of a driver you've become, no matter how conscientious you are of other drivers around you at least once a day you too become a "Dick" Driver. It may only last for a fleeting moment it may last for a few minutes but I guarantee you that someone you share the road with today is going to look at your driving and say to themselves "...look at this guy, what a schmuck!"

It's definitely November here on Long Island, I could barely drag myself away from being under the covers but yet here I am. Today would be a perfect Sunday if it were not only Saturday.

Sunday Under Covers: Tears Of A Clown

"Tears Of A Clown" original by Smokey Robinson & The Miracles

Back in the late '70s when the fantastic mod/punk band The Jam ignited a renewed interest in the Mod scene, bands like The Merton Parkas, Secret Affair and The Lambrettas blew -up the spot and then quickly faded, as did the scene itself. The bands themselves being more inspired this time around by the Jam then by the original mod-scene that came about in London during the early to mid '60s. When the Jam folded in '82 so did the majority of interest in Neo-Mod culture. Oddly enough Southern California experienced a short lived but largely influential Mod scene during the early '80s. As for London, the scene melted away into the oncoming post-punk/new wave explosion.

When The Parkas disbanded in 1980 keyboardist, Mick Talbot, would go on to play shortly for Dexy's Midnight Runners then formed The Style Council along with The Jam's Paul Weller.

Here's The Merton Parka's only radio hit:

"You Need Wheels"

Not my pick for a stand-out song but then again no one ever asked for my opinion on the matter.

I know it's five o'clock in the a.m. but I'd like to announce my return to the 'sphere with a little "Beggin'"

Not my usual fare but a great song is a great song.

Check out this video as well:

SUNDAY: UtC

This is sort of a part 2 to my brief post from yesterday.

Listen to The Brothers Johnson - Strawberry Letter 23 first:

Then go back up top for the original Shuggie Otis version.

Shuggie

and as an added bonus, a scene from "Jackie Brown":

...And So It Goes.

Thanks to everyone who's been putting out good vibes for my father.

Saturdays operation wasn't exactly a success, the doctor had to go back in on Monday and even then he's been experiencing some complications, I'll probably be taking him back to the emergency room tomorrow. He's not in any pain, so that's good, but something says we may have to look into a medical malpractice case because this makes four operations in five months and the Doc still hasn't gotten it right.

Alright, enough of the tiny violins.

This tune is something both my dad and I have always liked, except he swears its a Paul Simon song. What are you going to do? He also doesn't believe Freddie Mercury was gay.

Thanks again everyone.

from ITN News--

July 22, 2008

The Cambridge-based band Hamfatter have been tipped as the "next big thing" thanks to TV show Dragon's Den.

The indie band performed their latest single The Girl I Love in front of the panel of 5 self made millionaires for one-minute, before making a two-minute business pitch for £75,000 to produce their own album.

Their performance impressed "Dragon" Peter Jones so much that he offered them financial backing, in return Mr Jones will get a 30 per cent cut of the band's royalties.

Although Mr Jones' offer was less than a big record label deal, the band will have total control over how their songs are recorded and produced.

Lead singer Eoin O'Mahony said: "No one else will be able to follow this exact route again but I don't see any reason why more entrepreneurs won't get involved like this if we are successful."

This album represents a complete genre change for this Portland, Oregon band on the New Jersey label, Italians Do It Better. Moving from a threesome to a twosome seems to have brought on the changes, their first two releases showcased the band as a noise-rock/dance-punk outfit who only ever released their music on vinyl sold directly from their shows.

Having given up on the noisy feeback side and now focusing on their more cleaned-up electro tendencies Glass Candy comes off as an American version of The Knife (which works for me because I like The Knife)

Glass Candy's new label site, Italians Do It Better is actually a Blogspot where you can find free stuff, show notes and band info (among other things). The list of bands they represent, while all new to me, fall into this same arty-electro-dance vibe. I'll be checking out some more shortly.

180 Beats Per Minute

If there was any music that had the ability to make you feel high it would have to be Drum'n'Bass, I'm sure there's many other genres that have that effect but back in the mid '90s guys like Roni Size, Amon Tobin & Squarepusher were my addiction. I was recently revisiting some drum'n'bass courtesy of an old friend in San Fransisco when he told me to check out some High Contrast. After a quick search and an eMusic download BAM! It's Back! A Welsh native, Lincoln Barrett, is the guy behind the beats. He recorded his first album, "True Colours" at the age of 22 in 2002 and is still recording with a new album out earlier this year.

I'm not saying this is the greatest music in the world, (cause it's not) it's just that for me it has it's time and place. (I'd also like to add that it sounds better pulsing through headphones while riding the NYC subway system then it does coming from my car stereo while waiting to turn into Trader Joe's parking lot. Times, they sure do change!

Nobody Get's Out Alive

I've always wanted to post about this famous Moshzilla photo, I never got the background info though as to what show this was taken at so I think I'll just add a song of my own choice.

I've got to say that there have been a few shows I've been to where the music penetrated my cranium and got me contorting around like that, probably without as much finesse.

Look at the intensity on her face, anyone else care to imagine what's got her Mosh up?

A Question To All Moggers

Gas Face-

The face you make when taking a poo or blowing a fart. popularized by 3rd Bass in the 80's

I had this most fascinating conversation at a bar once that started with me telling a story about how one day when I was in the 8th grade I was up in front of the class reading my book report and I accidentally foofed.

Now, the people I was having this important conversation with broke out laughing because they knew what I meant but hadn't heard the word before.

Growing up in my family we didn't say the word fart because it was thought to be too ugly a term so we said "foofed". As the bar conversation progressed I found that most everybody had a similar word they used growing up and now I would like to know yours.

Don't know what to say...

I had just finished parking my car in front of the house, I had been out doing some food shopping, when I looked to my left and saw three birds hopping around my neighbours lawn. Quickly all three popped up and flew across the road towards another lawn, just as they were about to make it to the other side the third bird in the back got clipped by a passing car. It happened so fast I didn't realize what I saw until the chirping grew louder and I noticed the two other birds had flown back to where the third bird was lying in the street. As this was happening about eight more birds of different breeds flew in close, some landed on telephone wires some flew right to the nearest curb, all of them chirping in a distressed mode. Another car came and as it did the chirping got louder, the injured bird started to get up as the other birds flew to safety. The approaching car slowed down a bit and drove around the flailing bird. The other birds started darting back and forth across the street as if trying to ward off traffic, two little sparrows dropped down next to the bird who was now laying very still although I could see it's head looking around, one of the original three birds flew down next to them and they all started chirping loudly and in unison as if saying "get up, get up!" when another car coming from the opposite direction quickly approached all three birds at the very last second reluctantly flew off and the injured one got hit again. All the birds flew up to the overhead wires and just chirped wildly for a moment and then flew off, except for one bird who sat there on the wire directly above with his head tucked under his left wing, silent.

Sunday Under the Covers: Uncle Leon

On my way back from Manhattan last night, sitting on the Long Island Rail Road a little less drunk then I had been an hour earlier and with another 45 mins to kill before I got in my car, I pulled out this weeks Village Voice for a quick perusal of what was going on music wise. This weeks VV happened to be a sort of "Best of Brooklyn" edition that they do time and again. When who should I happen to see but the mug of an old drinking buddy of mine, Leon. The article is here (Country Music Grows in Brooklyn)

It's been a while since I've seen Mr. Chase who is not only a musician but a damn fine playwright and a Lighting Technician (from what I remember). Mix in a fistful of charm and a slight shit-kicker attitude and you've got a really good guy. If I'm ever allowed back in the bar we used to hang out at I'll be looking to buy him a beer. Until then I'll just enjoy the music.

Check out his website: Uncle Leon

YouTube seems to be running real slow today, let it load.

(This video seems to be from a St. Patty's day/Birthday party for someone I don't know, Leon comes in after about 2mins)

Harvey Korman: 1927-2008
From IMDb News
29 May 2008 5:50 PM, PDT

Comedian Harvey Korman, a multiple-Emmy award winner best known for his work on "The Carol Burnett Show" and in comedies such as Blazing Saddles and The Pink Panther Strikes Again, died Thursday at the age of 81. According to a family statement issued by UCLA Medical Center, Korman reportedly suffered complications related to the rupture of an abdominal aortic aneurysm he experienced four months ago. Korman’s television career spans back to the early ‘60s, including small parts on such classic series as "The Red Skelton Show" and "The Untouchables". It was not until he began to appear in skits on "The Danny Kaye Show" that he became known for his dry delivery and ease with playing the second banana. Korman joined that show’s cast in 1964 and remained with it until its cancellation in 1967, the same year he joined the skit comedy series that made him a household name, "The Carol Burnett Show." On "Carol Burnett" the lanky Korman’s claim to fame was playing the perfect straight man to the outrageous slapstick comedy of the other actors in the cast, but mainly Burnett and fellow cast member Tim Conway. They and the fourth member of the variety show's core ensemble, Vicki Lawrence, spoofed a number of iconic films and television series throughout the show’s run. "We were an ensemble, and Carol had the most incredible attitude,” Korman said in a 2005 Variety interview. "I've never worked with a star of that magnitude who was willing to give so much away.'' Korman spent ten seasons on "Carol Burnett” before leaving to helm his own series, "The Harvey Korman Show", which was quickly canceled. But the comedy actor soon parlayed his familiarity into a number of recognizable roles on series such as "The Love Boat", "Roseanne" and "Mama’s Family". He also lent his voice to The Great Gazoo on "The Flintstones" in 1966, before finding fame on "Carol Burnett." But it was his turn as Hedley Lamarr, a clumsy version a moustache-twirling villain in Mel Brooks' Western satire Blazing Saddles, that film buffs may recall best. He also appeared in two other Brooks comedies, History of the World: Part I and High Anxiety, in addition to playing Professor Auguste Balls in Trail of the Pink Panther and Curse of the Pink Panther. More recently Korman partnered with Conway for a live show, "Tim Conway and Harvey Korman: Together Again," which toured the country. He is survived his daughters Katherine and Laura, his wife Deborah Fritz, and two children from his previous marriage to Donna Ehlert, Maria and Christopher.

Who: All Moggers who can make it
What: To meet up, drink, eat and drink!
When: Sunday August 10th
Where: NYC somewhere To Be Determined
Why: because
How: ( I don't know how to answer this one!)

It all began 3 or 4 months ago when Erin said she was coming into town to see Radiohead play some festival and she asked me something about something and I said "Hey, we should meet up for a drink if you get the chance" and then somebody else said "Hey, I want to meet up for a drink too!" and then it quickly became a mogmeet NYC style. But that was then and this is now. Time to get serious and put this into effect.
Everybody interested please put your 2cents in below. Thank You. More to come.

In my spare time, something I've come upon a lot of recently, I found that I can make a bucket load of money as a small jobs handyman. I went to a local retirement community and tacked up a card saying that I was "...available to fix minor plumbing problems, install ceiling fans, rehang cabinet doors, put in new door knobs. Call me and tell me what you job is and I'll see if I can fix it." Well I've been working all week and it looks like I just tapped a cash cow. I've got another week all lined up and probably more to come. At $40/hr I've already put a grand in cash in my pocket. I'd feel guilty but the competition is asking for between $50 and $65, so actually I'm a bargain!
So I suggest to all you handy folk out there, find yourself a rich neighbourhood or a retirement community and fly your handyman flag. I swear it's a goldmine! (just stay off Long Island!)

M

"In 1996, the Parallel World label released the LP "Cambodian Rocks", a collection of Cambodian psych and garage music from the 60s and early 70s (probably), compiled by an American tourist named Paul Wheeler from some cassettes he bought in Phnom Penh. No information on the songs was provided at all, no artist names, no song titles, and no recording dates. Four years later, Parallel World reissued this compilation on CD with a few extra tracks, but still without any identifying information. Unfortunately, it is more than likely that many of the featured musicians, showing a definite Western influence in their music, were murdered by the Khmer Rouge regime which took over power in 1975. Certainly none of them ever received any money from the sales of this compilation. However, the music is wonderful." from WFMU's "Beware Of The Blog"

This is the best song I could come up with, I believe Paul Weller is singing about his wife but the sentiment (as well as the lyrics) doesn't seem to get too creepy if you replace her with your mom.

Mog is a cat in this series of books that tends to get up to a lot of no good but in the end is loved unconditionally by simple minded children despite how many times Mog fucks up. (hmmm...seems like a familiar story somehow)

I think our Mog has been huffing on a Scotch Guard Bong. Things seem to be running real slow and making no sense.

Songs about Driving

And Don't You Forget It!

I'm not a big "Jam Band" fan but when Phish called it quits it seems like my own private little secret Widespread Panic took up some of the slack. I first came across this album Space Wrangler back in the late '80s while looking for used punk cd's Widespread Panic sounded punk enough so I bought it and boy was I surprised and I really liked it too! One day when I was listing to this in my dorm room I get a knock on the door and it's these two hippies from down the hall who were like "Wow, you know these guys?" and I explained how I just bought it and blah, blah, blah. So about a week later Ben and Margie (the two hippies) came by and said that I should come out with them that weekend Widespread was in town and they were playing a small little bar in the east village. Sure enough Ben and Margie knew the guys from Widespread because they were all from the same area around Athens Georgia. The band they played with that night turned out to be Blues Traveler years before they gained a name for themselves. Me and the hippies hung around with the guys from Widespread drinking pitchers of bear and watching Blues Traveler play.
Years later I'm doing security for some concert venues around the city and I happen to work a night when Widespread were back in town, with a much bigger following, and sure enough as soon as the guys saw me they remembered me and we stood around talking for awhile, great guys. I saw them a few years after that (around 95, 96) and this time I was in the audience and once again they saw me from the stage and got me back to talk after the show. As their albums went on I thought their sound got a little too hippie-dippie for me, but what a great group of guys. If you don't know the band please hit the red dot and give the song a listen.

Here's another Athens band from the good ol' early days.

h3. REM - Driver 8

I just paid $40 for 10.3 gallons of gas

Translated into British that's: ￡20 for 39 litres of petrol which after further investigation I found this at TimesOnline.com

"The Automobile Association said that petrol prices had hit a national average of £1.098 a litre yesterday, equivalent to £4.99 a gallon.
Petrol is expected to pass the £5-a-gallon mark this week."

Since ￡1 Sterling is basically equal to $2 'merikan I guess I should just stop complaining and thank God and George W. Bush for the oils we are receiving.

That 10.3 gallons I just pumped into my Jeep would've cost me roughly ￡50 in England or $100(!!!)

Keep fighting the good fight America!!

There were a lot of bands that came and went back in the New Wave days, just like there are now. But there were really only a handful of bands that defined the genre.

h2. Depeche Mode - I just can't get enough

Death Cab for Velveteen

Earlier this morning I fell for the April Fools joke that was supposed to be the leaked Death Cab For Cutie album. I listened to it in it's entirety and thought it was pretty good, the jokester even put in the new DCFC single to make it seem more legit.
However, the album was actually that of German band Velveteen who released the LP "Home Waters" in early 2007. Because of this "mislabeling" the band look to be getting quite a bit of attention now that people outside of Munich are hearing their music. They do sound a lot like DCFC, their lead singer even sounds astonishingly like Ben Gibbard at times. On the Velveteens MySpooge page they claim The Notwist and Death Cab as inspirations for their sound and that is very much evident.

Bed Stuy, Do or Die!

Picture if you will a white boy on a skateboard making his way to a pizza parlor two blocks from his school, now picture those streets littered with burnt out cars propped up with cinderblocks and broken crack viles getting stuck in your wheels, two years earlier Spike Lee's "Do The Right Thing" ignited a neighbourhood 3 blocks away from me and put the need for local residents to go on night time wilding sessions on the "rich" white boys who now roamed their streets. Thankfully I hung with some real cromags who enjoyed an honest brawl if there had to be one so late night chinese food runs were done in packs. We had a "health food" store down the block from the pizza place, they had a small fridge stocked with every type of malt liquor you can think of. $1.25 for either a 40oz of Haffenreffer Ale or Old English Golden Reserve. They also sold incense, prayer candles, brillo, cat food, and in the back behind a curtain a guy would say Yah mon? and I'd drop a ten and get back a bag of the seediest white boy weed they sold, but we took it cause that's all that we could get. But this time he told me that because the police were watching the shop I needed to buy something legit as well, so I looked around and they had 4 cd's for sale under their "counter" I said I'll take that one for $8, I handed him a ten and he handed me back the cd and another bag of weed and said "enjoy". I enjoyed.

Don Baron Turski became a hit around the Tuesday night card table. I recently got in touch with an old friend from those days whose living just North of San Fransisco with his wife and two kids, yesterday he emailed me a copy of the album I had given to him 14 years ago when I was last out his way.

There is nothing ground breaking going on here, Don Baron would turn out to be one of those many unknown rappers who soon became one with obscurity. Little does he know that there are ten white guys scattered across America that if they were to hear just the first note drop would smile form ear to ear and be able to sing his lyrics from start to finish.

Q is for Queensryche

Alright, so I thought I had something for each letter turns out Q was a tough one. Nobody has turned me on (yet) to a band starting with the letter Q but awhile back Mogger Darmuzz and I were talking about how great this album was which made me go through my bins and dig out my cigarette burnt jewel case of "Operation Mindcrime" and revisit the days. So in a sense Darmuzz reintroduced me to the world of Queensryche. Blame her.

An alphabetical list of great music I found through my fellow Moggers.

(These guys are uber hipsters in NYC, or maybe they're so yesterday I'm not too sure. But for the time being I find them fun and that's cool, ya know...whatever).
