WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

The '80s: XTC

Posted over 2 years ago
**XTC - Dear God**I got struck down with a stomach flu today and my morning started out so promising, I hate summer colds. I'm just going to post a bunch of '80s vids and mp3's tonight and not say much. Enjoy or ignore.

  1. dermahrk says Another great video. I own Skylarking but somehow never read or forgot the lyrics. The fact that they run on the video really drives the point of the song home (which corresponds to my beliefs) and I discovered the content is as entrancing as the music. Well done! BTW, is that the new wave-era Joe Jackson you're using as an avatar?

  2. dachmo says You are correct! JJ is one of my favorites, up there with the Jam.

  3. dermahrk says So, I have to ask - do you like all of his music, as he's covered a lot of musical ground? I really like the first two albums, didn't care for "Beat Crazy" at all, then all the reviews I read said his later stuff was very different. Caught a video on MTV and said "nope, not for me any more". I bought the Joe Jackson Band comeback CD a couple of years ago and liked that, so I guess I'm stuck on the "new wave" (now 25 years old!) kind of stuff.

  4. dachmo says Actually I do, up to a point. His act has always been in flux. He's a guy who was only marginally interested in the music he's become known for. His first 2 albums being basically the same, beat crazy started to show somw of his natural leanings as did Jumpin Jive which, altough there are some silly tunes showed me an artist who was growing musically then Night and Day was all about the composer in him. It's true after NandD I lost touch with what he was doing but kept up with the reviews on his subsequential releases. He's moved on in his career and as long as he's happy and still garnering favourable reviews, you know, god bless! He has gotten a bit weird looking though:

  5. annieander says I have to comment...although very late to this. I love JJ, and really even enjoy Will Power and Jumpin' Jive. Laughter and Lust gets a LOT of play time. I still picture him the man in your avatar, and his voice is timeless.

  6. annieander says The other day, when I stumbled upon this post, I was away from my music collection. As a long time fan and listener to XTC, I wanted to add a track, a favorite. While I understand that there was tension behind the creation of this album between Mr. Partridge and Mr. Rundgren, they sure made a beautiful album.

  7. dachmo says Oh, man You don't know what you've started. With XTC you can't have just one: Skylarking from start to finish is just one of the best albums! But then again they have so many good albums. As for Joe Jackson, I unknowingly had a 20 min conversation with him one night at a bar in Manhattan. I was working late and stopped in to watch the end of a World Cup match (back in '93 I think) I sat down at the only spot at the bar and just asked out loud what the score was and he answered I never really looked at him was too busy watching the game we bullshitted for a little while I pulled out a cigarette he bummed one, said thanks goodnight and took off. The bartender then came up to me and was like "You know Him?" "who, him, no, why?" "...that was Joe Jackson!" I turned to the guy on my right and he was all "pretty cool, huh?". If I had known, I probably wouldn't have been able to say anything, so it was pretty cool. Not like the time I shared an elevator with Arthur Miller. I love NY.

  8. This was my first post ever....in case you are interested. Yea...I really like this band. Probably my first musical obsession, next was They Might Be Giants. http://mog.com/annieander/blog_post/71341'>Sorry to have to correct you on the World Cup date. It was 94. 1990 - Germany, 1994 - Brazil, 1998 - France, 2002 - Brazil, 2006 - Italy. I was there for 2 of the wins. Lucky me. Not at the games, but in the country of victory. Good timing I suppose. Anyway. Cool story about Mr. Jackson. One for the books at least. Now on to XTC. I'm a huge fan of the old stuff, and cut my teeth on this album, and O & L. On Drums and Wires I am addicted to Scissor Man. His voice just contorts to the music. Brilliant. I love some of AP's new stuff. Here is a favorite.
