    Lazy Line Painter Jane
I've had a few conversations concerning this song. What I've come up with is that "Jane" is a free spirit who may have been too free with her knickers and is now knocked up. She possibly has a fungal infection in her mouth due to "Licking Rails" (i.e. going down), she may be pregnant and needs to be wearing boys jumpers. Left town because everyone thinks she's a prostitute and is now sleeping on the streets. Supposedly in small towns around Scotland they hire people to hand paint the lines in the streets and quite often these guys would be found sleeping by the side of the road, hence a Lazy Line Painter. If you have any further insight, please let me know. Lazy Line Painter JaneWorking the village shopPutting a poster upDreaming of anythingDreaming of the time when you're free From all the trouble you're inIn the mud, on your kneesTrying hard not to pleaseAnyone, all the timeBeing a rebel is fineBut you go all the way to being brutalYou will have a boy tonightYou will have a boy tonightOn the first bus out of townOn the first bus out of townLet's see your kit for gamesAll the girls look the sameYou are challenging style for running milesYou're running miles in some boy's jumperBoo to the business world! You know a girl who's tax free On her back and making plenty cashWhile you are working for the joy of givingYou will have a boy tonightYou will have a boy tonightOn the first bus out of townOn the first bus out of townYou will have a boy tonightYou will have a boy tonightAnd you hope that she will seeAnd you hope that she will seeYou are in two mindsTossing a coin to decide Whether you should tell your mumAbout a dose of thrush you got While you were licking railingsBut you read in a bookThat you got free in BootsThere are lotions, there are potionsYou can take to hide your shame From all those prying eyesLazy Jane, all the timePainting linesYou are sleeping at bus stopsWondering how you got your nameAnd what you're going to do about itYou will have a boy tonightYou will have a boy tonightOn the last bus out of townOn the last bus out of townYou will have a boy tonightYou will have a boy tonightAnd you hope that she will seeAnd you hope that she will see

  1. chucky says I'm not sure what I would have made of it, if I hadn't read your interpretation first. But, as it is sounds like you're right. I don't see the pregnant thing though. A rebellious chick might just wear masculine clothes as a fashion statement. The "you will have a boy tonight" could just be referring to her promiscuity.

  2. dachmo says The first few times I heard this song I didn't really hear the lyrics and I just thought it was a song about a girl who was looking to meet a boy she was in love with who was coming to town by bus but never shows so she sleeps at the bus stop waiting for him. Then other people said she was a prostitute. My friend Meg said she thought Jane was preggos. I'm not sure about that either. Boots is the name of a pharmacy chain in Scotland as well as a supplier of free pamphlets on sex ed and STD's. That's a new piece of information. Why I care, I don't know. I like the song regardless of it's meaning. Thanks for your insight Chucky!

  3. bringmeup says I love Belle & Sebastian. To me the song is about a girl caught in a bad cycle selling her body for money but wishing she could break free, wishing someone would help her...I don't know. Sounds awfully sad though. =o/

  5. joeybenavides says I makes no sense (and, simultaneously, plenty of sense) why Belle & Sebastian isn't WAAAY more popular. The Boy With the Arab Strap stands as one of my favorite albums, and their newest one was the fancy of my eye for quite some time.
