WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

I'm Starting to Come Around

Posted 8 months ago

I haven't been all that big into shoegaze going all the way back to "My Bloody Valentine", I actually returned that first disk of theirs to Tower Records three times because I thought there was something wrong with the audio transfer. I remember telling the manager that they must have sent over a bad batch of MBV disks because this is the third one I've returned "The audio sounds all screwed up!", I even had the guy listen to it and he agreed with me.

Well, I still have problems listening to those old MBV albums, even though I now know what to expect. Lately, as a lot of you are happily aware of, the "Shoegaze" sound is coming 'round again. And this time my sense's are finding a lot of it most agreeable.

Here's their Myspace

release date April 28th, 2009 on Fat Possum records

MBV is kinda like escargot, its an acquired taste. I got into them in '91 and only after reading an interview with Robert Smith in which he stated that it was one of his favorite bands. I figured, shoot, I'll give 'em a try.

I find that when I gaze at my shoes for too long, I end up walking into walls.

WTC - It's pretty good, not all great but pretty good.

Kev - These guys? on Rock Band? Really?

MRX - I had been reading so many great things about the album that I had this preconceived idea of what they sounded like and when I finally heard it I just immediately thought something had gone terribly wrong. At first I thought something was wrong with my cd player, then I figured that somehow two songs got layered onto the same track when they burned that specific cd, then when the manager listened to it and agreed that something was wrong, I felt sure I was right. i don't think I realized that I was wrong until a few years later when I borrowed the cd from a friend.

When I read about how much MBV means to some people I feel like the colour blind that can't see green, I just can't understand what people are talking about.

Yeah I know what you mean. Some bands get great press and I can't quite figure out what the draw is. It's like I'm not hearing what everyone else is hearing. I want to, but I just can't. Oh well...

Nothing like starting the day with a big fat noise. Love it.  Great band from the Kiwiland!

Btw, "shoeglance" sounds much better than "newgaze" to me. Good find. We should use that term to tag bands. -nods-
