WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

New Wave Wednesday - The Sound

Posted over 2 years ago
If there ever was a band that needed to be rediscovered on a grand scale **The Sound** would be that band. The history of the band includes critical acclaim, massive touring, seven albums and a cult fanbase. With all this going for them though the band would hit that brick wall of bad marketing, poor timing and unfortunately suicide.
Their first two releases, Jeopardy (1980) and From The Lions Mouth (1982), are considered near perfect Post-Punk/New Wave albums but yet the band is virtually forgotten. Sounding too much like one of the bands label mates, Echo & the Bunnymen, the people at Korova convinced the band to become more radio friendly for their third album, All Fall Down (1982), which when released still failed to attract the listeners interest mainly due to the lashing they got from their adoring critics for becoming too poppy. Subsequently Korova would release them from their contract soon after.
(This mp3 includes a hidden track after the first one ends, so keep playing)As I only recently found these guys I wouldn't be able to tell you more than what you could find here: "The Sound":http://www.renascent.co.uk/pagessound/sound.htmlThe band would go on to produce three more albums and a mini-album for various independent labels. They called it a day after their 1987 release.

  7. dachmo says I was really surprised how good this album was and even more surprised at the fact it took me 24 years to find it.

  8. 1234chainsaw says Yeah, I found The Sound only a few years ago as well. Essential stuff. Luckily most of their stuff has been re-released, and the Dutch Radio series of live recordings is really good too.

  9. Augusts1 says Ooooo I like these guys. I've not heard of them either. I really like the last two songs(or 3 w/the hidden track) over the first. Great find Dach, you new wave maven you! Thanks for the heads up on them.

  10. AA Coppertop says Ahhhh! Refreshing. The singer sounds like he's just singing how he sings. My number one reason for shutting off a MOG mp3 after a few seconds: vocalist affectation, be it the wobbly warbly "I'm just a confused young indie lad" approach, the "precious poetess enunciator, whose every syllable ye must savor", the "I'm a man of the earth, and I'm really, really hoarse" approach, the "I'd be Billie Holiday, really, if only I weren't unlike her in every way except in my ability to slur" approach, etc. And then there's that chick with the ears and the harp who sings like a cat choking on a hairball, who is in a category by herself.

  13. poebegone says The Sound! Oh, there must be a hole in your memory. But I can see, I can see A distant victory, A time when you will be with me. so the words are a little mushier than i remember, but there was a time i swooned over that awesome song.

  14. dachmo says So you knew of this band when they were around?
    Permalink posted 12/02/2007
  15. poebegone says i know that one album, Heads and Hearts, and i especially know (and loved) that one song, Total Recall, which got a bit of airplay in the one and only radio station that played new wave in the Philippines in the '80s. From the Lions Mouth is new to me tho, sounds like there's a whole lot more to them than i knew. (:

  16. dachmo says I read your post from yesterday, about the a-hole ex and your sacrificial cd collection. Real sorry to hear about that. A few years back I had a good quantity of my cd's stolen right out of my apartment and I still feel the twinges of pain from it every so often when I go looking for an album only to find it was one that must've been stolen. Luckily I've slowly been replacing them albeit with mp3's instead of actual cd's. I am very scared of losing what I have on my hard drive so I've been researching ways to properly back it all up. I've gotten a little off track here: has anybody asked you to join Multiply "(link here)":http://multiply.com/info/about ?

  17. poebegone says i did the same at first, i tried to rebuild it thru mp3s over the years and then my hard drive crashed, and then i tried again and then my hard drive got a major virus. the mp3s had far more artists than the old tape-CD collection of course, but that collection was everything and a lot and so much sentimental value. tapes i bought at fifth grade, shit like that. at some point i just stopped trying. when you find a brilliant backup idea, let me know, will ya? i so need to do it, too. and yeah, a million moggers (or okay around 10) have been asking why i'm not in Multiply, i will be, it's just that i'm only able to do half or less of the uploads i used to do. it's the same reason i'm not around as much. work-related internet limitation issues. phew, long reply, i feel like i haven't talked to you for so long. great to bump into you today. (;

  18. dachmo says I haven't been keeping the same hours as i used and then there's the considerable time difference. So yes it's been nice to (briefly) chat with you. I recently found out your name is Ilya, where did poebegone come from?
    Permalink posted 12/03/2007
  19. poebegone says Dave, as much as Ilya is lovely, very Slavic-exotic, it’s really Ilay (ee-lie; sounds exactly like Eli as in Eli Wallach). it’s my real-life nickname, simply a derivative of Sheila (one of my two first names). poebegone is, oh, just this nerdy thing. comes from woebegone, a silly word with interesting etymology (you'd think it is the absence of woe, as in woe be gone, but it really means the excess of woe, bc begone is Old English for beset, as in beset by woe). jesus, is that nerdy or what? i am embarrassed to tell it. (: it's usually taken as a username so i've come to replace w with p, and think of that as the excess of poetry, Edgar Allan Poe, and other poe's you can think of. (i considered toe for a moment, as in theory of everything, but sounds so odd.) hah. your turn. what's the dachmo story?
    Permalink posted 12/03/2007
  20. dachmo says Is it possible to become dyslexic as you get older, cause I knew that Ilay. I know of woebegone, I know a few Poe's as well. Now I know Poebegone. As for me, The only sport I used to play in school was a game called Lacrosse, it's pretty big in N. America as far as High School and College sports are concerned. Lacrosse, not hockey, is actually the national sport of Canada. It's yet another thing we co-opted from the Native Americans. Well when I was a kid my father used to scratch my initials into everything I owned in case someone tried to steal it (my father firmly believes EVERYBODY is out to screw you over) so since I paid good money for the stick needed to play the game he figured my name needed to be scratched into it. There was another guy on my team named Doug Marinelli so the initials DM wouldn't do, so he decided to make it Da Mo. My coach, who was a real prick, saw it one day and started saying "Damn Mo!" everytime I screwed up. So there's that little part of the story. Then years ago after Al Gore invented the internet I tried to get an AOL account using my whole name but it was already in use so I tried my three initials plus my birth year and that was used as well. I tried 4 or 5 more combinations but nothing was going through so I was about to settle on the name Maud'Dib from the Herbert book "Dune" which I was reading at the time and even that was taken. So I looked again at how to get something out of my name when Da Mo popped up and yes that was taken as well but Da Ch Mo wasn't. And I don't pronounce it Dak-mo it's like Satchmo, dachmo. There you go.

  21. poebegone says fascinating. your father scratching your initials into everything you owned - the details that nail the storytelling, i love it. “Damn Mo!” is funny, too. i always did pronounce it Dak-mo in my head but i always did wonder as well if it had anything to do with Satchmo. and i clearly remember being very curious about the Ch and Mo after your MotW writeup. i promise to wrap this up, you're probably asleep now anyway. just 3 more things. one, my sister and i were addicted to the family computer as kids and a lot of our games were branded Tecmo, and it's what we named our favorite cat. we both cried when Tecmo died. anyway it's how i came to pronounce your name Dak-mo. two, the initials of my real name are SMBN, and SMB is a quite known acronym of a beer brand in the Philippines so i got teased with that a lot as a kid. three, i used to have a favorite among the first three Dune books and just now realized i've forgotten which, and it's bugging me, but anyway i used to be in love with the idea of melange and the word itself. so, good night. (:

  22. dachmo says I'm of Irish decent and my last name looks and sounds a hell of a lot like Moron and at the age of 37 you would be amazed at how many people giggle a little when they make the connection. I'm sure if we took a poll more people then not pronounce it with a hard ch but in my mind it rhymes with Satchmo. David works as well. In Dune speak Melange is the spice and it is an intriguing word. I really like the way the word Maud'Dib sounds but as I recently found out in Dune speak Maud'Dib translates to "teacher of little boys" which seems kind of creepy. Goodnight Ilay.
