MELT-PROOF AND SCRATCH-RESISTANT

Somebody's been listening to lots of Talking Heads

Posted 9 months ago

...and that somebody would be the fine folks of Bell X1.

I actually heard this one on the radio the other night. (Yes! New York finally got a decent radio station! WRXP, it could be better but I won't complain too loudly.)

These lads have a load of great music out and coming out (3/3/09). They've been local favourites since their days fronted by Damien Rice, when they were known as Juniper. After Damien left, to herd some sheep and think things over, they took on the name Bell X1 (the plane Chuck Yeager flew when he broke the sound barrier) and quickly became one of Eire-Lands most popular bands.

I'm not so interested in filling you in on the bands ever so exciting back story as much as I just wanted you to hear what I can only figure is their homage to one of my favourite bands, The Talking Heads.

If you put your ear up next to the speaker you can actually hear David Byrne calling his lawyer.

"West Of Her Spine" is such a great song, and I heard it on East Village Radio! I'm curious about this new album - but a TH influence can never be bad.

Talking Heads would have been my first guess.  Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

cool, at least they're doing it right. I like.

Speaking of TH, I recently got my hands on another copy of that Rauschenberg-designed "Speaking in Tongues" LP that I was kicking myself over (and I got it for a fraction of the cost of the one I saw on e-bay last year). w00t w00t!

Nice. I've kind of liked Bell X1 / Juniper but never enough to get a full album. I should give them another chance.

Actually, I'm not too down with this album. I like this song and maybe 2 or 3 others but the rest have a real gooey, ballady, mainstream vibe to them.

    Not keeping my boat afloat.

They're one-for-one in my book. In lieu of any new T-Heads, one could do worse.

I may be alone here but I was/am pretty fond of the latest Byrne/Eno outting.  Again, not the T Heads but pretty satisfying. If I had done a top ten for 2008 it would've taken that tenth slot.

Wait a minute! I liked the Eno/Byrne thing, too. Not as much as My Like in the Bush of Ghosts but I liked it.

I'm honored, especially after my embarrassing typo. My Like in the Bush of Ghosts? Well, as they say, like goes on...
