Sample Searching with Old School C

Posted over 2 years ago
"Old School C":http://mog.com/Old_School_C has been digging through a back catalog of old '70s and early '80s music that seems to be heavy on the Funk, R&B and early Hip-Hop genre's (does anybody call it "Rap" anymore?) and has steadily been plopping down some true nuggets of virtually unheard of material. Recently he gave us a post by "RAMP - Daylight":http://mog.com/Old_School_C/blog_post/117634that for the first time was something that I knew I had heard before just not in it's entirety. I recognized it as being the background sample picked up by _A Tribe Called Quest_ for use in their song "Bonita Applebaum". I'm not sure if he already knew this or if I brought it to his attention, but when I said something about it he quickly got back to me, telling me he had been stuck on ATCQ's opening sample for that same song and that he knew it from somewhere but had yet to figure it out. So I can only imagine he spent the following 48hrs hunting it down like any of us would when we get that itch we can't scratch and this morning I was happy to see that he indeed found his sample hidden in the beginning of this song: "Rotary Connection - Memory Band":http://mog.com/Old_School_C/blog_post/118115. Sample chasing is something I would love to do but in the end I know would drive me absolutely bonkers. So I here by give him some major props for his endeavors.Hit the links above to check out these tracks and go to his page to catch up on what you may have missed. Here's the Tribe mp3 for good measure.

  7. Augusts1 says I always knew that was a sample at the beginning of this but had no idea who/what it was from. Thanks for the headsup D. There are so many hip hop songs that sample old R&B classics & obscurities. I don't play the sample game unless I recognize it right away from another artist I know.

  8. Bartleby says "Do I love you? / Do I lust for you? / Am I a sinner cuz I do the two?" It's always ever so refreshing to listen to proper lyrics and not just shouting and F-word inflation in hip-hop (rap - whatever you want to call it). ATCQ is one of the great hip-hop groups who have helped shape the genre. Just the title of the album on which Bonita features is enough to get you going: "People's Instinctive Travels & The Paths Of Rhythm" Thank you for researching this sample. Q-Tip and Phife and DJ Ali Shaheed Muhammad have always looked to great artists to sample. Case in point, "Walk On the Wild Side" re-visited by our trio: Thanks for linking me to Old School C... Now can I kick it?

  10. Old School C says Hey thanks for this post Dachmo, I dont feel right accepting all the credit for this. All due credit goes to Tee Pants of http://www.youtube.com/teesnpants. She is the one that gives me the wisdom and knowledge to do these posts. She is a sample specialist and collector of rare music. None of this wouldnt be possible without her guidance. Thanks again Dachmo cause people need to know that music today 9 times out of 10, is either sampled or replayed. There is a website that exposes this but I just cannot remember what it is.
