_U.T.F.O._'s boastful rap, about a streetwise svengali who tries to chat up a lovely lady he meets on a NYC sidewalk, was met by a huge backlash from women who were peeved at the supposed tale told by it's author. Nearly 100 "Answer" raps were recorded in response to this one song. The only retort that got true recognition from the radio stations though was a rap conceived by now legendary producer Marley Marl. Lolita Gooden would record _"The Real Roxanne: Roxanne's Revenge"_ under the name **Roxanne Shante**. The producers eventually got sued and Roxanne had to share the songs billing with U.T.F.O. because when they recorded the rebuttal they used the same backing beats and rhyme structure. In the end all was good everybody made money and careers were launched."The Boast: by U.T.F.O.":http://mog.com/dachmo/blog_post/114714

(I wasn't part of the scene so I had to get that tidbit from allmusic.com)
Yeah, I tend to forget that just because something is big in NY doesn' t mean it's big any where else west of the Hudson river.

Aaah, the good old days..I remember the Latin Quarter. Nice one. UTFO were on top of the heap for about a second or 2, although they were 1 step away from New Jack Swing. Intelligent rappers. Roxanne was pretty cool. There were a few other Roxannes, too, right. Man that was a long time ago.

Yea D, I had no idea, but then again I lived in bumfuck OR at the time so I missed ALOT of stuff from the '70s/'80s that were commonplace to most people.

This brought back some memories . . . I never got into rap too much even back in the day (although I did recognize Run DMC as just kickin' ass), but my cousin was huge into it at the time and used to play this song all the time.

I remember the Roxanne songs...but probably not as much as I should. The way you "battle posted" the 2 tracks was cool, too. There was another female rapper called "The Real Roxanne":http://www.discogs.com/artist/Real+Roxanne,+The as well. She wasn't too bad. Lots o' Innocence back then. To me Hip Hop was making pop moves at this time, trying to fit in, but then came Eric B +Rakim, KRS, NWA and there was a change indeed. Not sayin' it wasn't for the better, but the battles did get a little tougher.

Thanks Cody, I remember the first time I heard the NWA tape. I was an 18 year old suburban white boy going to school in late '80s Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. I never felt more white-bread in my entire life. The album was too hard, unapproachable. I shake my head now when I see Ice Cube starring in a Disney Movie.

That is wierd to see him in that movie. I got a lot of chuckles my 6 year old didn't understand when we saw it in the theatre. Fuck tha Police, indeed.

That Real Roxanne song If I remember correct was actually a better song than the one I posted, I'll put it here if I can dig it up. I totally forgot about it and had to think deep, that would've been 2 decades ago!!
