WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

When I first signed on to MOG, all of 11 weeks ago, I spent a little while getting used to being a mute. As I soon found out it would take awhile for other MOGgers to come around to my brand of BullShit that at times seems to roll endlessly off of my finger tips. I know there were a couple of posts I made in my beginnings in which I just babbled on in a sort of stream of consciousness style rant because it appeared that no one was going to read the damn thing anyway and of course they didn't. In time my "trusted" lists would grow and more and more people would sign on to read my blatherings and listen to the music that makes me happy. The majority of folks that MOG are doing it for the same reasons. I guess I was on MOG for about a week reading all the posts that popped up when I came across this post by "quagmire of quirk":http://mog.com/quagmire_of_quirk/blog_post/92628. In it she presented a few songs by a band I never heard of but instantly clicked with. She heard something that made her happy and then passed it along to others to hopefully make them happy. At this point for me, MOG had accomplished what it set out to do. Get people to talk about good music and then get people to go out and buy it. I bought Pinback's "Summer in Abaddon" as well as "Blue Screen Life" and thoroughly enjoy both of them, money well spent. So when I later saw a posting for Pinback's new album "Autumn of the Seraphs" from "pinkertonwasbetter":http://mog.com/pinkertonwasbetter/blog_post/107735, I just assumed it was coming from a fan because up until this point I had yet to read such a negative write up for any band, to me that just wasn't the point of MOG. So I flamed her a bit.I later found out that what Benny Hill once said was very true "Never assume, because you're likely to make an **Ass** out of **U** and **Me**". I went back and read through her early posts and found this: "A huge thanks to all you good-people at MOG who responded to my internship post below with suggestions. As it turns out, I’ll be doing album reviews for the “READ” section here.":http://mog.com/pinkertonwasbetter/blog_post/92626 I was a little taken aback that the MOG main office had to hand out assignments, I thought that that's what we were already doing. But then it foolishly dawned on me that MOG is a business, so while we're all off to the side writing posts on "The Little River Band" and "Foghat" someones got to be churning out the reviews on albums that have yet to hit the streets. This way when a non-MOGger searches on "Hypemachine":http://hypem.com/list/3588 for the brand-spankin'-new _Pinback_ album up will pop MOG with a review and a song thus increasing MOGs foot traffic as well as possibly pumping up those subscriber numbers. Hell, that's exactly how I got here. Pinkertonwasbetter's reviews are, for the most part, really good. I just wasn't aware at the time that MOG has a bunch of ringers out there but, whatever. No harm, no foul! Keep on keeping on I say and long live the MOG!I would post a song from Pinback's "Autumn of the Seraphs" but I've heard it's not that good, I guess I won't be buying it.

  2. Bartleby says A bit of Kontroversy is always good for furthering our musical adventures.
While I'm not naive enough to dismiss your argument on the commercial motivations for posting negative reviews, I do believe any critique is highly subjective. The reviewer is entitled to their opinion... They may not adhere to the aesthetics proposed by a given artist but if they're honest enough they'll acknowledge this proposition.
Conversely, to dismiss a negative review just because it goes against your "fan-hood" or belief is just as dishonest as saying "I don't like it." Tastes are for buds.
Assessing and appreciating any work of art is a matter of discerning not liking (or licking).

  3. darmuzz says Augusts wrote a post on how a lot of News is posted by Mog staff. One of them replied. You can find it here: http://mog.com/Augusts1/blog_post/104889 Personally, I don't have a problem with anyone posting negative reviews; I think all opinions are welcome because they are just that. I get tired of reading reviews in rock magazines where you suspect that the band was promised a good review in exchange for an interview and photo shoot for the cover... I'm a guilty party too. I really did not care for the second Arctic Monkeys album when it was released, and said so in a post, but it has grown on me.

  5. dachmo says Music, as with all of the arts, is entirely up to the individual. Agreed and good point. I am equally amazed when I post a song and it's response comes back as either "good pick...I LIKEY" or "...eh!" I still like the song non-the-less and I will never waste your time or my time by posting a song I do not like.

My exact feeling. A friend suggested I should post more polemic songs. Which in his mind meant bad stuff that pervaded TV and radio. Why should I bother about that kind of artists? There's enough good music to keep me busy and content. Why waste time on worthless things?

  8. Oatmeal says I think that journalism was/is pretty central to some of the founding members of the development team. I heard about Mog from the largely defunct independent media review site neumu.com which was edited by Michael Goldberg and had contributions by all sorts of indie critics that also poke around here on MOG. The venture makes sense when you look at where it started and the traditions of reviewing popular and also under-reported alternative musical genres and performers. Not really all that nefarious. It gives them a media outlet with the potential for subscribers who are in it for the love.

  9. dachmo says disregard my last comment above, it was intended for another post. MOG lords if you can hear me this is the third time this has happened, my comments keep getting re-routed. **Oatmeal** True, MOG was created by music lovers for music lovers. In NYC there's a great music store called "Other Music":http://www.othermusic.com/ that's constantly being bashed even by the people in the indie music scene as being too snobish about their tastes in indie music but at the same time they are held on high for being that way. MOG thankfully isn't all about "indie" music but I'm still a little weary about all those nefarious avenues that will sprout up out of it's necessity to grow. David H. is correct in calling MOG a weird beast.

  10. Oatmeal says Agreed. I just see it as a way for some people to get their tastes and views out while so far not having to deal with another gatekeeper. If it stays to its core of music, I don't think it can go too far awry. As for growth, that is scary. It is almost the American way, grow until you collapse under your own weight. There are ways to avoid it if the community stays committed.

  11. dachmo says If you look around you see almost no advertising, they may be music lovers but where's the money coming from to pay for all this. All the problems the site has had recently are due to their need to grow with the community. Would you pay an annual fee to MOG, would it be worth it?

  16. poebegone says hmm. i must say i'm at a loss as to how to interpret that. in any case, as i have posted as comment on that review, i have full respect for the reviewer's freedom to dislike the album in review and none of what i said on there was to question or challenge that dislike. i love that your post acknowledges the straight fact that mog is a business, and i love the way you ended the post.

  17. primopowers says I pesonally don't take reviews to heart. I cant count the number of times I have read a great review of a CD but then after listing to it I didnt like it and vice versa. This is why I try to listen to a CD before I purcase it. Of course there are some bands I'll buy without even previewing it like U2 or Radiohead. That said, I did like the MP3 you posted.

  18. dachmo says Agreed, I don't even trust the trusted critics. Thats why mog is great because you usually get to hear a couple of songs from the band, catch a video, see some pictures and read an ordinary persons point of view. 10 years ago i would go out and buy half a dozen magazines every month in which my purchases relied solely on a couple of paragraphs from someone I didn't know and if they made it sound good I'd hit the stores. Generally only half the stuff I picked that way ever lasted, I usually sold the stuff i didn't like back for a few bucks. I've bought more albums in the past couple of months then I have in the past 3 years, mainly because of my experiences here on mog.

  19. Marigold says Great post Dachmo. As you read in that review, I chimed in as well. I must admit, I am very confused with pinkertonwasbetter's attitude. Especially in regard to her response to Poe and now with her response to you via mogmail has really got me scratching my head. I don't think she gets where we are coming from. I can't tell if she is being sarcastic and thinking we are all idiots or if she is really being sincere. When she says things like "Thank you all for your comments. Any feedback, both good and bad, is appreciated! Love, Roxy" or "Oh stop it; you’re being too sweet. Thanks again for the feedback! ~Roxy" My biggest beef is still with MOG supporting such a bad, bad review. And once again, I have no problem with her not liking Pinback. But I do have a problem with her insulting my musical tastes. She really went out of the way to insult people that could or would listen to Pinback. It just seems so un-MOG to me. David chimed in on the post and essentially took the position of no position. I see his point, MOG basically does not want to get involved with this. All in all it is pretty petty I suppose.

  20. dachmo says It's true we're the flesh and blood here. One thing we don't have though is editors, if she dropped that review on a magazine editor they would have chewed her out and not because she didn't like the album but because of her attitude. She should stand by her review but she should've taken a second look at the rest of it. Those comments she added later on where childish and dismissive but, you know, she's barely 19 not that that's an excuse but it kind of is.
