MUSIC CHATTER AND MATTER

Signing Off

Posted over 2 years ago
On **UB40**'s first album _"Signing Off"_ you wont find any "Red Red Wine"'s or "I Got You Babe"'s, only brooding, political, dubbed-out reggae. An immediate hit for the British, almost unheard of in the US when it came out in 1980. They soon dropped their heavy dubbing ways and opted for a more straight forward reggae sound. Personally, I'm a big fan of theirs even though, during the course of their 15 studio albums, they have definitely beaten their poppy reggae sound into the ground. Looking at my iTunes I've whittled their collection down to 62 songs. Second only to my Talking Heads collection at 72 songs. I've had UB40 on in the background all night so I figured a post was in order as a 'thanks to the band' for making it a most enjoyable one.

  2. contrabandwidth says I've always kept my eye out for songs with my name in it. So far I have a short list of songs by The Toadies and now UB40. It was once an unusual name that was interesting to see in a song title, before it made the top 20 list of boy names for like 10 years in a row (Thanks Brad Pitt, thanks Fight Club!). Still, not exactly a name like Mary or any name that would lend itself to rhyme schemes better. Thanks for the post!

  3. Dzendvokh says I got a mix tape (an actual cassette), way back when with Tyler on it and remember loving that song. I never really liked later UB40 and never sought out where Tyler came from. So thanks for reminding me of the song. And pointing me to the album.
