WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Oh, The Amazing Things You'll Find!!

Posted over 2 years ago
I was reminded of something that made me go bring up my Talk Talk albums, which of course made me go check YouTube for a certain video. They had what I was looking for plus someone had posted an extended "Video Mash-Up" of the same song I wanted. It's **Talk Talk**'s _"I Believe In You"_. What the person did was combine the song to a clip from one of the _"Ernie Kovacs"_ shows that aired during the '50s and it just works out so well: (the actual video is now poted in comments)There's a yin to this yang. The song in the video is called _"I Believe In You"_ but the song in the mp3 I'm adding is called _"I Don't Believe In You"_ also by _Talk Talk_.When I get around to it I'll do a more in-depth write up of this much overlooked band.

  1. Augusts1 says "The Colour Of Spring" got ALOT of spins on my stereo back when it came out. Love that album so much, it's so full of melancholy in a good way. I don't think Talk Talk was all that overlooked personally. They may not have been as popular as other '80s groups but I think they received alot of praise & attention for their music. Their last 3 cds including COS were received quite well by the critics(although the last 2 didn't sell so well).

  4. dermahrk says The clip indeed works preternaturally well with that song. Ernie Kovacs was a comedy program (a little too old, even for me) so I'm unsure how this footage could've been used in a 1950s sketch comedy show, but WTF.... When you do a writeup, see if you can find out where they got the name. A 60s group called The Music Machine had a hit single with the song "Talk Talk". Just wondering.

  5. dachmo says Outside of their work on the first album where they do get lumped together with other '80s new wave acts, I don't know if I would quantify the remainder of their work as having anything to do with the '80s. I would love to have seen Talk Talk get a much wider audience than just critics and, well, us mogger type's. But then again I don't think thats what Talk Talk was aiming for. After Talk Talk Lee Harris and bassist Paul Webb went off and formed a group called _.O.rang_ which was an interesting mix of world music sifted through spacey electronica, if that makes any sense. Then there was the very sparse _Mark Hollis_ solo album as well as the slightly more up-beat "Rustin Man" collaboration done between Paul Webb and Beth Gibbons from Portishead. As for the Kovacs footage, after a little research it looks like he had had many different types of shows on the tube starting from the late '40s to the late '50s. Making it sound like the networks didn't really know what to do with him. I don't know enough about the show to dispute it either way. But wherever it came from, it works nicely.

  7. Augusts1 says Dachmo, I would agree w/your statement of Talk Talk's later work not having much to do w/the '80s since it has quite a timeles quality to it. I would from COS on they don't sound '80s whatsoever. I wasn't aware of the other members groups, although I knew of "Rustin Man" but didn't realize who Paul Webb was. Btw, I didn't think the Ernie Kovacs clip w/the music was all that interesting, but to each their own & all. I only watched about a minute of it at best. The song is far more interesting.

  8. dachmo says If you've got a minute here's the real video for "I Believe in You". I liked the Kovacs clip mainly because I wasn't expecting it, it's not a life changing thing by any means but at 3:45 in the AM it was pretty fantastic.

  9. Augusts1 says Haha, now I see why you thought the Ernie K. clip was so interesting! Not seen TT's vid before but it's REALLY dull. It makes the EK version simply stunning by comparison, lol! What were TT thinking?

  10. dachmo says Nothing like a static one shot to liven up a somber song! at one point in the video he looks as if he's trying hard to keep from laughing.

  11. Augusts1 says They could have livened it up even by showing them playing their instruments but don't even manage to do that!

  12. poebegone says loves me some Talk Talk. ditto on the entire first paragraph of the comment you wrote after dermahrk's; they innovated, transcended, ended up elsewhere in the grand pie called universe. on top of all that, you could hear 'em in GTA: Vice City. ;D
