When I started college back in '88 I found myself exposed to an entirely different spectrum of music then I had been used to while growing up as a new wave geek on Long Island. My roommate was from Woodstock NY and was heavily into the D.C. "straight edge" scene. I had no idea what the hell he was talking about. It seemed like everybody around me was all punked out. There were country punks, southern punks, city punks, South American punks. You also had your Goths who were mainly from Florida, which I always thought was weird and there was so many of them. The punkiest I ever got on Long Island was the Ramones and to me they were just rock & roll, punk was over in England. Back in college, I went to an art school in Brooklyn, my roommate was secretly getting me up to speed with everybody else. Along with Bad Brains, the Minutemen and Minor Threat I would get schooled on the first Lemonheads album. (to be continued)
