Is it just me or . . .

or is Elliott Smith the Jim Morrison of his generation? Both very talented, and somewhat popular before their untimely deaths. And, massively more popular and revered after their passing. I just thought of this after seeing some of the posts which have popped up the past few days (and I know the anniversary of Elliott Smith's death was just a few days ago), and seeing "this mp3 post at Chromewaves":http://www.chromewaves.net/. Maybe there's a mythological, Jungian collective unconscious component here. Possibly something about Orpheus, but I'd have to consult with either Mr. Rilke or Mr. Cave about that.

  1. Puffmagic says I think you're right, cause I didn't like either of them and thought they were both overrated. Oh SNAP! Nice Analytical Psychology reference, btw. :-P

  2. SatisfiedMind614 says I think Elliot Smith is more like Tim Buckley...not nearly the bigger-than-life persona that the LIzzard King portrayed...but a great songrwiter

  3. d0gstar says that's why I had to change my photo just now. The serious, high falutin' nature of that post just doesn't fit in with a silly monkey. An awfully bitmapped pic of Mungo Jerry works much better.

  4. Kirk says that would be awesome if Elliott Smith appeared in a dream to Wayne & Garth. I'd watch that.

  6. d0gstar says I agree, satisfied - Tim Buckley works much better. I was thinking of throwing Mr. Cobain in there, but naaaaaah - he wasn't nearly as overrated.

  7. SatisfiedMind614 says I'd be hard pressed to find anyone who compares to Morrison...love him or hate him...he was unique

  8. d0gstar says I guess I was thinking, too, of Elliott Smith's appeal to a certain age group - 18 to 30 year olds, I'd guess. Maybe once every fifteen years or so there's someone like that, who dies tragically, and whose death strikes a chord with people.

  9. Sureshot says Elliott's music has always reminded me of Ray Davies (The Kinks) without the accent. Morrison, I fully agree with SM's comments.

  10. Laxman29 says Satisfied is on the right track - I'm listening to Elliot right now and happy sad about it. Don't think he was overated...he had his big moment with Good Will Hunting....but thas it otherwise he struggled to sell records and get recognition. Oh Yeah he also never dropped his pants during a concert, like the lizard king.
