Pocket Disc: Is the CD gonna suffer the same fate

Posted about 1 year ago
I have been perusing my record collection in an attempt to transfer to itunes my vinyl when I came across these. In the summer of 1969 these popped up in vending machines at the shopping strip malls. I bought about 10 of them that summer but this is the only one I have found so far. They are actually vinyl singles that play at 33-1/3 speed that could fit in your pocket. I have long thought they were the precurser for the CD.However sound quality was not thier forte.Just wondering if anyone else has come across these. After that summer they kind of disappeared.

  2. dermahrk says I never heard of this failed format, even though I was around and purchasing mucho music in '69. Thanks for sharing. Every single music media format has been replaced (ok, vinyl is still popular with a small minority) and I expect that to happen with the CD as well - it's already started, of course.

  3. toronno says Cool! I've seen those small CDs that fit into the centre of the CD tray, but not these. I've invested in another failed format - the MiniDisc. It's a shame they never took off, but at least I can continue using them for home recording.

  4. cpetersonart3 says thanks dermahrk, toronno,dj ivi I've had a penchant for failed media types. I started off with a mini reel to reel-3-1/4 " reels and then it was the 8 track and then these. However ,I have kept my vinyl, who knows how this will all end up.

  5. caliscrnwrtr says never heard of this format, but all this stuff will die its own slow agonizing death (see: the CD) or will be erased into nonexistence by prevailing marketing trends (see: the miniCD) or by a stronger PR firm (see: blu-ray vs. hd-dvd). unfortunately, none of it has anything to do with the customer, b/c if we had our way, we would've legalized, organized, and improved the quality of the files being file-shared years ago.
