The magnificent 7

Posted about 5 years ago
Several moggers know that I've always been a freak for the possibilities of space travel and lapped up everything about the manned space program when I was a lad. How many out there can name the original 7 Mercury astronauts? Anyway, Wally Schirra - one of the original 7 - died today, leaving just 2 (John Glenn and Scott Carpenter). How does this relate to the topic at hand? Well, there really haven't been a lot of songs about space...I can think of a few:- Space Oddity by David Bowie- Also Sprach Zarathustra - Deodato (only because it was used in 2001: A Space Odyssey)- Telstar by the TornadosCan someone out there help me unfreeze my brain and name some others?

  1. emscee says Well, there's "Rocket Man" by Elton, and "Supersonic Rocket Ship" by The Kinks. Joe Cocker's "Space Captain" and, of course, Albert Brooks' "Party From Outer Space"

  2. deedee says ...and "Mr. Spaceman" (Byrds). I can name the Seven, and it's because you taught the names to me on a hot July day in Los Angeles in 1975. (Also, props to The Right Stuff.)

  3. dermahrk says Not to mention "CTA 102", another space/ET - obsessed track from the Byrds. And, ranging a bit afield into ET territory "I Want An Alien For Christmas" by Fountains Of Wayne. A hit 45, but not musical, would be Bill Dana as Latino spaceman Jose Jimenez in the slightly racist "The Astronaut" from the late 50s, early 60s. "Wishing On Telstar" from Susanna Hoffs (of the Bangles) solo CD. My brain is freezing now.....
