Beyond the Sea

I was spinning the dial last night and came across "Beyond the Sea" on IFC - I hadn't seen it before. I couldn't take my eyes off of it...it was like seeing a dead animal on the side of the road: it's pretty gross and you don't want to stare at it but you can't look away either.How in world did this movie get made? Was Kevin Spacey on drugs while making this thing? Were studio executives on an off-site retreat when it was released? This movie was so bad that I stayed up until 11:45pm (way past my bedtime) just to see if it was all just a bad joke or some kind of illusion.

deedee says I caught the last 20 minutes (on IFC) the other night and was stupefied! So much so that I tried the beginning (again, morbid curiosity) when it was on last night, and I lasted five minutes. It was-- exactly as you say-- a bad roadside accident. ... What's sad is that Spacey believed in this with all his heart and soul. The poor bastard even recorded a soundtrack album, which is a sort of funny idea, in a sick way. ...
