Ever since I heard Trouble, RL's signature hit, I've been addicted. Who has a voice like this? No one. And who in contemporary music sounds like him? No one. I addition to have mind-blowing talent, he's reached an atmospherically ridiculous level of originality.
That being said, I haven't purchased the album yet. But, I did manage to snag this song.
From a drumming perspective, this song hits home in so many ways. While technically simply, style oozes from this song into the ether. The simple 1-3 snare pattern brings back memories of Motown. Breaking from the sound of many drum tracks today, there is no sense of over-production here. The sound hasn't been squeezed; on the contrary, these drums sound raw, unpolished, and perhaps even out of a tune. Of course, that last comment isn't true, but it's that perception which makes listening to this drum pattern so much more interesting. We can't forget about the cymbals either. While I'm no cymbal-identification virtuoso, I hear a Ziljian Constantinople-like sound. I suspect many of you aren't familiar, so for quick background, this particular cymbal is used heavily by jazz drummers seeking wash, some sizzle, all while maintaining stick definition.
Horns here are perfect. Simple, unobtrustive, and yet clearly meant to stand at or near the front of the sonic landscape. Once they cut out, we're left with guitar accents sitting on the 2, molded to sound as if the entire guitar part was in fact recorded 40 years ago. And, just when we've settled, our soul-oriented back up section pops in for a visit. Throughout it all, a soft bluesy acoustic keeps the slow moving train on its feet.
And like I said, this voice is unbeatable. We all know it, so I won't say a lot about it. I'm already certain that this is one of my favorite RL songs of all-time.
