Another lo-fi post to add to the growing list on this blog:Brand Nubian - The Return. As is the case with many of my suggestions here, the real gem of this song is the beat and not the vocals. Again, that's not to say that the vocals diminish the overall listening experience nor are they poor -- simply put, the beat matters more.I like this one, and it grows on me the more I listen to it. Now, of everything I hear within this beat, one thing in particular really grabs hold of my eardrums -- the flute. There aren't many songs that include such an element and do it well, but here the application is tasteful (think garlic mashed potatoes, again). The flute itself, however, would do no justice to the ears if it were uncoupled from the drums. And what about them?Well, lo-fi is our spelling bee champion. We have dirty, fresh out of the crate hit hats coupled with a muffled snare, and yet, the soundscape from the two is flawless. The bass drum is, to repeat a phrase from a previous post, bolstered by a rich bass. All in all, a great listen
