WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

Jeru speaks again.

I felt obliged to allow Jeru the Damaja to grace my MOG twice in one week -- this particular song is great for a whole number of reasons. Numero Uno: I instantaneously assign 1,503,184 brownie points to any beat that successfully makes use of a piano. The right combination of chord choice (by the original artists) and sample quality is nearly impossible to come across. This particular piano sample has both -- and makes peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on the side.Numero Dos: A silky electronic piano sample. I believe I'm hearing a Fender Rhodes in this song, but I'm not 100% about that. If anyone has a better guess, please, correct me in the comments. That being said, this piece of beat just works. The aforementioned sound is silky but not Kenny G cheesy. It's not imposing, but you know it's there. Again, it just works.Numero Tres: This song is another example of a song that has a simple bass on 1-3, snare on 2-4 pattern. It's so simple, and yet it helps to keep everything else blended so well.

  4. Cody B says "The Breaks.com":http://www.the-breaks.com sez the acoustic piano loop comes from, "I Love Music"-Ahmad Jamal-Awakening (1970) In listening to the Ahmad piece, you can see what an incredible flip this was. Awakening musy've been in a lot of Mom's and Pop's collections, 'cause 4 or 5 of your top producers have used different songs from it. Awakening: (ABC 1970) * "The Awakening" Nas - "Street Fight" Pete Rock & CL Smooth - "It's on You" Shadez of Brooklyn - "Changes" * "Your My Everything" All Natural ft Lone Catalysts - "Renaissance" Pete Rock & CL Smooth - "Get on the Mic" * "Wave" DJ Krush ft CL Smooth - "Only the Strong Survive" * "Dolphin Dance" Common - "Resurrection" Dida Baby Pa - "Can't Wait" Jemini the Gifted One - "Story of My Life" OC - "Time's Up" * "I Love Music" Jeru - "Me or the Papes" Nas - "The World is Yours"
