John Zorn is kind of like Frank Zappa to me. Sometimes I think he would record his grocery list if he needed to release something. He has worked with some of the best names in music, and is no doubt extremely talented, but he releases so much stuff, and the quality is varies so much, and is all over the place. But sometimes when he is working for a specific theme, artist, or genre, the results are fantastic. See my earlier post on his Bar Kokba release, or his tribute to Burt Bacarach. Here is Zorn with the knitting factory staples doing Ennio Morricones The Big Gundown

I gave up on Zorn for the very reason you mention. Though I remain curious, which makes it all the harder. This is a good one though.

Last time I heard of Zorn was in Moonchild's concert, and I don't regret being there. I do agree with what you said concerning the _"he would record his grocery list if he needed to release something"_ thing. Must say this one belongs to his great stuff shelf.

Ditto what the others said. I love me some Naked City, but his solo stuff is too all over the place. Out of all his solo stuff, though, I think this one and Krystallnacht (sp?) are the ones to get. Maybe that's because those are the ones I have. Great album, great track!

Just stumbled across Zorn through a new "film works" release, which I found nice. I was prepared for more serious stuff as this here, but that was not the case. Good to know, where else I can start do discover some bits and pieces of his work.
