I have recently had some good fortune in my local library trolling for music. Here are some of the albums I've picked up at my local library, many of them I have never heard, but have read about them in Mog posts by you people:
Bruce Springsteen - Darkness on The Edge of Town Harry Nilsson - Nilsson Schmilsson (remaster) Moby Grape - Moby Grape My Morning Jacket - Z Sifgur Ros - Takk... The Mountain Goats - The Sunset Tree Woody Gutherie - The Asch Recordings vol. 4 Art Brut - Bang Bang rock n' Roll Arcade Fire - Neon bible Ozomatli - Street Signs The Black Keys - Magic Potion The Kaiser Chiefs - Employment The Decemberists - Picaresque
This leads me to a thought. I looked on emusic tonight and saw that the cheapest subscription was $9.99 a month. Could you imagine how much music (and books too) could be available to your average citizen if you donated $120 a year to your local library? I mean I love Mog for the artists it turns me onto, but the library is where it's at in offering me the proper music listening situation. With all the things that get cut budget wise now a days, education and culture always seem to be the things that suffer the most. So think about it next time you buy that third album this month, maybe if we all contributed in this small way, we could have great libraries that actually reflected the vibrant culture of arts that is out there, but a little out of the peripheral of a lot of people. If this seems a little unrealistic, how about donating some of your old CD's instead of getting the two dollars you might be lucky to get at your local used CD store. Who knows, if you weren't into that new Editors album, maybe it will be the greatest album some one else has ever heard.Wow, this really makes my Monday morning seeing the positive feed back to this suggestion. So here's my plan. I have about 1000 CD's, and due to the wonders of technology, I have all of them on my hard drive, so they sit in boxes, where they rarely get listened to (technically). My wife is pregnant, and nesting instinct is in high gear, and it is a sore subject (the thought of slimming down my collection, yet again). They do take up precious space, and I don't blame her for wanting to free us of a little more clutter. So, Since the library has been so good to me, I am going to return the favor and make a donation of some of my CD's to them (one step at a time, as I said, this is very hard since I am very attached to my collection). So in the interest of diplomacy on the marital front, and a need to make a do something for myself that has meaning, I will document this further and post the results.

Donating your old CDs to the Library, what a great idea! This post deserves a 5 out of 5 :)

Wow, that's one hip library! But you do make an excellent point. I'm going to look into it, definitely.

I've donated quite a few CDs to the local library, after carefully making sure that none of the sweary ones have sneaked onto the pile....

That is an excellent suggestion. I have a box of CDs that I no longer want and think "someday I will put on eBay for a couple of bucks". Right. Never Happen. But the library? Awesome!
BTW, enjoy the hell out of that Moby Grape CD. One of the best LPs released in the 60s, IMHO.

Red Devil: You are a better man than me - well, actually - I am not a man I am a Whoa-man & I don't think I could ever get rid of my collection... I would be giving away my chillin... though I am not stressing the marital situation... who knows what tomorrow will bring... But I love your idea of donating to your local library !!! That truly is a grand gesture & helping to keep the music & the dream alive :)

Whoa whoa, not the whole thing! This is like a 12 step program - one da at a time. I will just divest myself of SOME of my collection. I've done it before, and it's very hard (heart breaking), but once it's done, I'm okay.

I will be here to lean on... & can help you as a sponsor... I did trim a little album fat in college... but I haven't done so since. I know I should - it's just the thought of saying goodbye to them - I am sure once gone - I wouldn't stress...
Still - takes bal... GUTZ - it takes a great big set of GUTZ ;P

Excellent idea! I have been holding on to duplicate CDs for years (fortunately the hubster and I have similar taste and we had a lot of the same discs in our collections) ... I've been hesitant to get rid of the doubles for sentimental value alone ... but I think I know what to do with them now! Thanks :)

Woo hoo Contra!! Sez this librarian. Some other Moggers have found good music at the library, see here: http://mog.com/darmuzz/blog_post/49398 Maybe even more some day thanks to you!

I can not say enough good things about looking for music at libraries. I have gotten to hear music that I would have never listened to before. When I go I always leave with the maximum amount possible, even if it means its all stuff I never heard of before. I have donated music and books before, its kind of nice when going through their collection, and you see an old favorite staring back at you

I am not willing to part with any of the cds I own. That said, I've often thought about donating old books but purchasing duplicates of good cds and giving to the library also sounds like a mighty fine idea.

Ahh, that's a fantastic idea...I'm all about it! Of course only getting rid of those cd's I def. don't need anymore.
You know, I'm clinging to some memorable tapes taking up space in the garage. You think they take the old tape? I'll just have to take a picture and get rid of them too!

I love that library list - in a shop they'd all be in different categories and you'd never have the serendipity of Bruce next to Arcade Fire. But like the others who've replied, you have moved me. I have a bag full of unwanted CDs, waiting to go to the trade in shop. I know eher to take them now.

Respect contra dude! That is a wonderful idea and in musical terms, one hell of a sacrifice. Karma will probably have something special lined up for you in the future . . .

great idea.........I am inspired. Excellent post. Thanks!
