I admit to being a musical snob most of the time. I can't help it. The first time I heard and started reading about Jack Johnson, I didn't like him. His back story just didn't have the pull I like to hear from some of my favorite musical idols. Born on the north Shore of Hawaii, he became a Pro Surfer. When he got bored of that, he focused on his first love of music. I'm paraphrasing like a mo-fo, but it is essentially like that. I have a hard time having respect for people who just seem to glide through life and are successful with everything they attempt. Sure, I can be jealous and bitter, but I'm human and I'm a realist too. For 99.9% of us, life is not like that. The thing that is amazing about rock n' roll is that it transforms the Poindexter's, dweebs and ne'er-do-well's into immortal sex symbols (see Rick Ocasek or Joey Ramone). It's not supposed to turn pro surfer studs into even more popular rock stud's.
But, I am a parent now. It does funny things too you. It makes you less cynical (at times) and opens your heart to the whims and fascinations of babbling , energetic little dervishes of your own genetics. My little dervish loves monkeys, trains and trucks. In particularly Curious George.
My wife put this soundtrack on the stereo, and my son recognized it from the movie after the first 2 bars. It was amazing. I continued to listen, and really ended up enjoying the music on the album. I was especially happy to hear this little cover from the White Stripes, since we both like to rock out to their music when we play together.

  3. HelenMarie says I pimp this album to all my friends with children! That's a great cover. The 3 R's song is the reason why I got it as a present...I'm all about recycling and love that it's on there for the kids to hear about. You know...I have a little difficulty with people who just seem to get things handed to em too, but I try to have empathy and put myself in their shoes. People usually seem to have more respect for those of us who had to work hard for what we have. The others are probably left unfulfilled in some way. But I still gotta love Jack Johnson on those poolside mellow days (don't think he's much of a stud though-for the record) Haha!

  4. contrabandwidth says It doesn't matter for the laws of attraction if he is or isn't a stud, he sells the stereo typical mystique. He's the dude who plays guitar at the party and gets laid - what's that you say? he just got back from surfing in Hawaii? I just re - grouted my tub. Who wins?

  5. HelenMarie says I love getting messy with grout for mosaic art, and my husband doing a home improvement project makes me hot and heavy! Maybe he'll branch out after the hype where's off and make more meaningful music for you in the future. Maybe I'm thinking wishfully. Whatever will be, will be.

  6. contrabandwidth says I more wrestle with the "golden god" dilemma. I know it's silly to be so into an artists back story, but you want to relate more to the mythical qualities of a Robert Johnson story over a "got his start playing frat parties where he met his future wife, a record executive..." story. That last one isn't about anyone I know about, but you get my point.

  7. HelenMarie says I actually got your point in your original post and I know how people feel about some of those typical artists/ performer's. Now there is *NO* comparison when you're talking about Robert to Jack. Both Johnson's...good call but come on...no comparison!!! ; )

  8. PopeyePete says Jacks got such a great voice. I first heard him when the video for Taylor came out. Remember the one with Ben Stiller trying to surf? Been a fan ever since.
