Cover Artist For Beck's ??Sea Change?? Dead From Apparent Suicide

Posted over 2 years ago
Visual Artist, Jeremy Blake, who created the cover for Beck Hansen's ??Sea Change?? album and a video for ??Round The Bend?? was presumably found dead in waters off of New Jersey. Blake had been a rising superstar in the art world and had done works based on British fashion designer Ossie Clarke, David Berman of the Silver Jews, and an unfinished piece on Malcolm McLaren. His death, 8 days after his girlfriend, film maker/blogger Theressa Duncan, own suicide is riddled with the mystery. Read the LA Times for more.

  1. Kate says So, is it just me or do you also find this quote from the LA Times story you linked to totally freaky (especially in light of the fact that Beck is a Scientologist): "According to several friends and art world peers, the two believed they were being stalked and harassed by Scientologists, an abiding fear that soured old friendships and made some of their respective working relationships difficult." Having grown up in L.A., I have known quite a few people who had quite frightening Scientology experiences, and i'm not at all surprised that Blake and his girlfriend were scared by them.

  2. contrabandwidth says I try not to hold peoples beliefs against them, but when I learned Beck was a Scientologist, I lost respect for him. It isn't a religion. Check out this article from the late great ??Spy?? magazine.

  4. Augusts1 says That is really sad. Sorry to hear that, he was a great artist. Scientology is an evil, draining cult. Thanks for the link to that incredible article Contra.

  5. poebegone says man, how freaky. thanks for the links to the LA Times and Spy mag articles - i read both in entirety, and looked the stories up some more. i joined an organization in university and later decided to leave during a very tough time when i was finishing my term as head of "propaganda" and on my way to running as overall chairman. long story short, i got so much stealthy harrassment and stalking crap from them that i almost wanted to change schools; in a very microcosmic way, i can imagine what it may allegedly have been like for Blake and Duncan.

  6. Augusts1 says p.s.I just watched the vid you posted & realized that Jeremy Blake is the same artist that did all the wonderful art in the Paul T. Anderson film "Punch Drunk Love" starring Adam Sandler & Emily Watson. If you've not seen it I highly recommend it. Blake's artwork is featured quite prominently(I have the dvd) & in the special features there is a plethora of his work for the film. Now I'm even sadder . . . .

  8. contrabandwidth says Yeah his work has been in like every Whitney Biennial for the past 10 years, and he's been displayed by the most prominent museums in the country. Very bizarre the whole thing.

  9. HelenMarie says Eeeek...That is bizarre. He was very talented. I live very close to Clearwater the creepy hub of Scientology. I was dissappointed to find out bout Beck too but there are so many other talented stars out there into it too. Jason Lee used to be one of my favorites and I just don't feel the same bout him either. We were talking about this on a post a while ago. There's a list of well know people in Scientology some where on the web.

  10. The Serenity Vortex says I can vouch first hand at how they hassle and hound you if you show any interest in them. I research loads of different stuff such as prophecy, paranormal, healing, ect. They had a stand at a local new age evening. Yep, they were right alongside the palm readers, the Reiki healers, paranormal book sellers, crystal stalls, etc. They even had some of their strange machines to measures different parts of your body and soul. Anyway, being a curious kind of person I bought a book about it, and they asked for my details so they could send 'promotional' stuff. Whaaa big mistake Floody!!! I got called and hassled to the point where I had to say I was going to start legal proceedings against them. It stopped after that. This was a chapter of theirs based in Poole in the UK. Weirdos the lot of them. The BBC recently did a documentary on them. And things get a little out of hand . . .

  11. HelenMarie says Wow, that is some crazy shit, Flood! Its so weird when we go downtown Clearwater, they're all over the place. Love the way he handled that in the end, but that guy could've used a smack in the face too though.

  12. The Serenity Vortex says lol.....they need something that's for sure. I wonder what they make of 2012.........

  13. HelenMarie says Oh. I know what your saying... the Mayans, right? I'm creeped by that too. Should I quit my job and start traveling on credit or what. I want to see the world and I think that's about I need.

  14. The Serenity Vortex says Not just the Mayans. It is written in many places including the bible about the end times. In the bibles case, the transition between the age of Pisces to Aquarius (which is happening right now and finishes around 2012. The end times, may not also be death and gloom etc. It may simply mean the end of one passage of time and the start of another, some claim it will be enlightenment rather than an apocalypse. Some claim it will be both. Also 2012 may only be the start of something which could be long and drawn out. It may be the end of something that happens suddenly. As you can tell I'm not sold on any one idea. But I have to acknowledge that so many strange things are happening here on Earth and our Solar System that there seems to be smoke and I'm looking for the fire. Did you know that our sun reaches it's next solar maximum in......2012! NASA has predicted that this could be on of the most violent phases of the Sun's activity ever recorded. Also keep in mind that during the solar minimum (which we are coming out of now) the sun gave off the biggest ever recorded X-Class flares ever recorded. They were off the scale. So much so that the had to change the scale they measure it by and increase it to allow grading for the huge flare. Other odd facts: Earth magnetic field has dissipated by 10% in the last 150 years. The rest of the Solar system is also experiencing 'Global Warming' The last Pole Shift was some 750,000 years ago. They happen roughly every 600,000 years. We are well overdue for some serious kicking ass by mother nature I could go on as there is so much more...........and it's out there waiting to be discovered :)

  15. HelenMarie says Wow, I see you _have_ done your research. The solar system always interests me. My brother works at the Goddard Space Station in Wash. D.C area. He's been sending me some cool links about solar dynamics and what not. Some of that stuff really gets me thinking and sometimes I can't handle it...The creepiness kicks in, you know. OK NOW! I am *not* joking...as I'm typing this I have my ipod on shuffle and this Beck song came on...about 4 minutes into it goes into a little trance style You got to check it out towards the end... talking about space and space travel! While I WAS TYPING THIS CAME ON MY SHUFFLE! Beck is on our trail spying on us! Talk about creepy. Well tonight... I'll be thinking about Flood and our conversation here while my eyes are wide open thinking about what the hell is gonna happen in 2012. Thanks! HAHAHA. Just kidding. I should be alright. !! I hope I did that right. ?

  16. The Serenity Vortex says Things is Sunshine, all of this is based on what is effectively new sciences and only a tiny microscopic snapshot of the behaviour of our solar system, and the words of ancient, long since gone civilisations. Despite all the research I've done, I will never be able to say for sure if anything will happen at all. My gut feeling though is that the melting pot of life is starting boil. Especially since UFO sightings are going the the roof at the moment, but that's a whole different subject which I feel is somehow linked. Check out www.coasttocoastam.com for a brilliant radio show that covers all the 'fringe' stuff out there. Some of it is really 'out there' in terms of weirdness, but to understand something we must look at all angles. None of it really worries me. What will be, will be, we simply just need to do our best for Earth and to each other in our own individual ways while sticking to the laws of Karma. I envy your brother, an awesome place to be. Must have loads of cool stuff to chat about over a beer or two...... Don't worry about Beck as Shloopy and MOG Brain have been dispatched to sort him out MOG style ;)

  17. contrabandwidth says I believe that it is a very western (perhaps, you could say "Christian") view that there is a finale to everything. It's that whole revelations/apocalypse mentality. But there really aren't any definite ends to anything - there are extinctions of species, but other species evolve and a new form of life takes hold. We are just human-centric in beliving it will all end with a apocalypse scenario - or at least that's what the Christian conservatives in power would have you believe. Humans very well could cease to exist, but the world isn't in trouble, it will live on. We are but a blip in it's history. As flood said, the whole 2012 thing my just be the tipping point, a new beginning. The optimist in me hopes it's a new peaceful time, and the skeptic...well let's just say the out look is dire. If those Poles do shift, our little technology thing is completely fucked since a majority of our memory of computers and stuff if dependent on magnetics - of course that would be the least of our problems, as tides and just about everything else on the planet is effected by the poles and gravity. I've heard the theory, and I can't say I know most of the specifics, but I do remember the basics of physics and polarity, and that would be a big deal if that were to change. Flood- I haven't watched the vid yet, but I'm looking forward to it when I have the time. Thanks for posting it.
