I know that Fistula posted earlier about his distressed over Michael Jacksons purchase of the rights to Eminem, Shakira, Beck and Bjork's music. So my question is, where do we stand on this? Here is a magnificent animation with music by Faithless and it's sponsored by Coke. Is it a fine line between advertising and a video? Is it art? Should I be disappointed?I really don't have much feelings about Faithless, and I think the animation is great. I'm not crazy about Coke being behind it, but there is not one product placement in it (that I remember at least - so if it was subliminal it didn't work. Or did it?).Check it Outhttp://www.faithless.coca-cola.com/html/start.html

  1. Dale says That's a really cool product, be it advertisement or video. I think that the source of fistula's frustration, and mine, is not that the songs will get used for commercial purposes; that happens already. The frustrations stems from the original artist losing control over their works, so they have no say in who licenses their music.

  2. Jonh Ingham says Fabulous animation. Does it matter if the funding came from Coke or BMG (a massive German publishing company)? There is a growing view in the music industry that funding music through advertising is going to happen on a regular and growing basis. If people continue to get music without paying for it it's seen as one of the only ways to pay for continued recording and support. I'm not hot on advertising in music, but where sponsorship happens - as in this vid - I think it's a good thing if it means art like this can be sustained.

  3. Rawkkiddoh says I gave up on all Coke products when they decided to change Obey Your Thirst to just Obey after Shepard Fairey started to gain popularity. I feel they will do whatever is needed to make a buck, plus I happen to like pepsi a lot better.
