Best 'Dis' songs (or albums)

Posted almost 5 years ago
Once again I was trolling my book marks and came across a whole slew of links on response songs. In hip hop they often are known as "dis" songs, but they go back centuries, apparently. I invite you to scan your MOG brains for your favorites.Update :Thank you Mr. Frost. I'll set the criteria to best dis songs, and do another post later about best reference songs. Be sure to include original and the dis. Doesn't have to be a hip hop song though, could be something like "Your So Vain."

  1. MrFrost says well i think theres a teeny tiny difference between a response song and a diss song, in hip hop at least. Response songs are more lighthearted, but still made competitively. diss tracks are just flat out mean, meant to humiliate the other person. A good example of a response is 'No Pigeons" by sporty theives, it was a response to "No Scrubs" by TLC. Pretty funny stuff. with diss tracks, theres zillions of good ones... "No Vaseline" by ice cube "Nail in the coffin" by eminem "hit em up" by 2pac they all go for the jugular

  6. Sam The Artist says "Body bags" by The game (in response to tony yayo beating up his producer's son) "back down" by 50 cent (in response to ja rule in general) these were a little more commercial though.

  7. Marco1019 says This would qualify as a dis track: LL Cool J - *The Ripper Strikes Back*, which was a direct response to Canibus. And yes, Nas gave it to Jay-Z with _Ether_, and Ice Cube's _No Vaseline_ is classic. I forgot about _No Pigeons_! Hahahaha, that track was funny!

  8. contrabandwidth says I think "Like a Rolling Stone" might be one of the most biting dis songs of all time. Some say Dylan wrote it about Joan Bias, I always thought it was a almagamation of different "counter culture" people of the time. Who ever it's about, it still bites hard today. It's truly vicious. Especially the "Royal Albert Hall" version, where it feels like it's directed at the audience when he says to The Hawks over the boos "Play Fucking Loud!"
