WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

In case you were sleeping...

This is the most enraged I have been at the powers that be since The Katrina debacle. Riot Squad Police turning on peaceful protesters, firing at and beating people with children. This is America at its classist and racist worst.
Immigrants are always the whipping boys for what ails the country. County Health systems may be in disorder because they are over burdened, but I assure you the hard working people who are picking you vegetables (because you wont), mowing your lawn (because you wont), and taking care of your children (because you wont), are not to blame. Nobody seems to point at the Health Care executives and insurance companies commissions when talking about health care reform. Instead we attack those that can't speak fight back legally. Or apparently you can attack them physically...
I had the great honor to work with some "illegals" over the past 3 and 1/2 years, and the only thing I have to say about the people I worked with was they would work 8 days a week if they could.
The great thing about technology is you can see a lot of the POV of demonstrators on sites like Youtube and here. Watching videos from the likes of MSNBC, one can hardly believe this is a liberal media spin as you watch people shielding their children from the bullets and tear gas of the cops.
Yes, this post has very little to do with music, but a lot to do with one more person making their voice heard in the ocean of internet. I chose the Billy Bragg version of "The Internationale" since may day is International Workers Day. I'm sure you can guess why I chose the second one. Post your protests if you like.

  1. ivylander says You are so right. I had a talk with my 10-year-old yesterday, as he has clearly been talking with some kids in his school and has picked up some....unusual ideas from them. He asked me whether there were a lot of Mexicans moving into our area, and I said yes, there were. Then he said he was afraid that we were going to have to cut down all the forests (he's quite the young environmentalist) so that all the Mexicans would have places to live. I told that if forests were cut down, it wouldn't be to provide homes for Mexicans. (I refrained from adding that the biggest housing-related threat to trees around here come from those godawful developments with houses starting at $600K.) He asked me why so many Mexicans were coming here, and I said it was because there were more jobs to do around here, and that they could make more money for their families by living here. I also said that I had a lot of respect for anyone who works hard (sorry, but you've gotta grab these teachable moments when they arise). I think I pulled him back from the brink....

  2. contrabandwidth says Hey, even if it seems like one of those sitcom morality moments, you gotta grab it. I think we forget that when kids get around the pre-teen age, they start to realize that the world doesn't revolve around them, and it's important to make sure they think of others, or how their actions effect others. To many adults are oblivious to the double standard's inherent in their rhetoric, and kids are the echo of that empty rhetoric. Probably more important than teaching your kid to have an opinion, is allowing him to form his own from his own analysis of information. Sorry, didn't mean to be preachy, but I have a 1 1/2 year old and I think about this stuff a lot too.
