Punk Rock Tuesday: It's gotta incite your "Teenage Kicks"...

Posted over 2 years ago
I discovered The Undertones through a John Peel interview. He cited Teenage Kicks EP as his favorite album of all time. That's pretty high praise from a band most people outside the UK (aside from us audiophiles) have never heard of.
Just listen - for a band from the politically volatile Northern Ireland, their music posses the "Teenage Exerience." In being apolitical it is political (I know, how post modern of me!). Basically, "Teenage Kicks" posses all the elements of a classic rock n' roll - simple chord progressions, infectious melody, good beat, and references to the need and want and longing for of the opposite sex. On top of that, the pure escapism of the whole thing - a North Irish band expressing that even in spite of political uncertainty, being a teenager is still hard.
The back to basics approach is what re-invigorated rock n' roll in the form of punk. While The Undertones may be up for debate as to their "punkiness" the very fact that they were recording songs about teenage love and chocolate this music in the pinnacle of the English Punk scene is pretty punk in execution.

  1. 1234chainsaw says Their early stuff was great, and the reunion album isn't half bad. I have fond memories of playing "Teenage Kicks" with a band I had in high school with two of my friends. For another stellar first wave punk band from Northern Ireland that wove more of the political experience into their songs, check out Stiff Little Fingers, especially their debut Inflammable Material.

  2. ivylander says Can't access videos here at work, so don't know which Undertones you've chosen. But their level of quality was so consistently high I'm sure it's wonderful. I've said this before on other posts, but they were probably the best opening act I ever saw (for the Clash in the late '70s).
