There's a scene in Cool Hand Luke, where Paul Newman's character, Luke Jackson, hears of his mothers death and quietly sits down with his banjo, and plucks out this tune. It doesn't really make too much sense in the grand scheme of the whole movie, and lyrically, I'm not sure how it relates to death. But it is one of those "actor moments" in which you can see the depth an actor has put into a character.
When I watched the movie for the first time when I was 17, it blew me away. I recorded it off the TV and put it on my answering machine (remember those?). It still confuses me to this day, but perhaps it's one of those scenes that more is said by not being said, which in the case of Paul Newman, is very appropriate, since that's the kind of actor he was.
I later found out that The Flaming Lips covered it, and bought the album solely for that (though I did like "She Don't Use Jelly"). I soon became a huge fan of the Lips, and have always delighted that they chose to cover such a great little tune.

Remember this well, one of the scenes that was all over the net when he died, a very memorable movie for me as well as a young age! I don't ever think I will live downt the egg eating scene either! Flaming Lips need to tour more here in the West!
such a great album, and its was a bonus for me to find this song on the album. I was not aware they had covered it, I bought it for this song.
Now that's a helluva cover...
Rawk - Definitely a great song. One of my favorites.
