Scott Walker Covers Jaques Brel - "Funeral Tango"

Posted over 3 years ago

If we didn't have artists like Scott Walker covering artists like Jaques Brel, we of the English speaking world might miss out on the sharp wit and sharp tongued lyrics that make Jaues Brel so great.

god, what a great way to end my night. I listened to it twice, and wished I was in the crowd to watch it for real. You have a good night, this was the cherry on top of the sundae

One night many years ago, I stumbled upon a broadcast of the film "Jacques Brel Is Alive And Well And Living In Paris" on public television and instantly became hooked on the composer (actually, at first there was a moment of disbelief that I was seeing something so intelligent and original on TV). It’s available on DVD now (unfortunately the excellent Atlantic Records soundtrack is only available on Out Of Print vinyl, if you can find it), and for my money contains the definitive English language performances of twenty-some Brel numbers.

Mort Shuman, the Brill building vet who earlier wrote "A Teenager in Love," "Turn Me Loose," "This Magic Moment," "Save The Last Dance For Me," "Little Sister," "Can’t Get Used to Losing You," and "Viva Las Vegas," cowrote the wonderful translations and does a "Funeral Tango" in the film that I only wish YouTube allowed me to share here.

Buzz - When I searched Jaques Brel, I came across some links to that movie, but I really became familiar through Scott Walker, whom I only first heard of when I joined Mog (!).  It was kinda one of those moments where I had the wind taken out of my sails - I thought I knew a little of everything when it cam to music.  Oh, how wrong I've been.  But, that's why I like it here.  I certainly could stand to learn more about Mr. Brel.
