WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Online Site Allows You to Map Out Your Music Obsession Further!

Well color me tickled pink. I have found the nexus where my need for visual information and facts combine. I had been working on some graphic design to chart the rise of what I call "The New Popular Sound" in music. TNPS genesis comes somewhere between The Beatles "Rubber Soul" and The Beach Boys "Pet Sounds albums. This is the time in which I think a new definition of rock and popular music was redefined, and in a sense, these albums are still influencing and changing music today. Problem is that from 1963 - 1967, it was such a prolific time period in music, that I was finding so much information it was hard to relegate it to the two pages I had laid out.Enter NNDB Mapper. This is a wonderful piece of online software that allows you to map connections of people and events, movies or even TV shows. This thing is simply incredible.I have started a map based on the influence of "Pet Sounds" album. Come see it in progress, drop me a line if you have some input. I'm having fun watch the map evolve before my eyes. Write a comment if you have any links to your own personal data mapping geekery!Pet Sounds NNDB Map:http://mapper.nndb.com/maps/913/000000913/

  4. contrabandwidth says We spent a lovely mothers day in the hospital. But, everything is fine now with our Lizzie Blue Eyes. I can think of 1000 horrible things I would rather do than to wait around a hospital for almost 3 days.

  7. contrabandwidth says It's really easy to use, but I see a few limits. I could see it being great for mapping out project progress as well. Love stuff like this. I don't know yet if they'll let you connect to other maps or not, but it is still only in Beta. As for finding them, I just read Boing Boing everyday.

  8. Jonh Ingham says That's fabulous. How far do you intend to go? Van Dyke Parks? Glen Campbell? Do you know about Pete Frame's Rock Family trees? Same idea as a family tree and only looking at the bands themselves. Works great for huge sprawling messes like The Byrds/Burritos/Gram Parsons and Fleetwood Mac, but he also did the whole LA/Eagles scene and one for Punk.

  10. contrabandwidth says Yes Jonh, I hope to get as obsessively detailed as possible. Was just thinking of Pete Frames book today, and thought this was a great too.

  11. Anonymous says Egad sir, where does it all end? Once you get to the Wrecking Crew, all of LA will be in there! Gold Star Studios will take you to Phil Spector which will lead you to both The Ronettes and half of New York, and Ike and Tina and all of Memphis and the South. Wow! You'll have made the connection from Howling Wolf to Brian Wilson - that's fresh.

  13. Anonymous says Thanks everybody for your kind words. Things like this and genealogy I just get obsessed with, writing stories with symbols. Jonh - I might not get that detailed, my original goal, with the original page layout I was trying to connect Pet Sounds to some of the great albums of the past ten years ("Soft Bulletin" "Summer Teeth", and a ot lof the Elephant Six bands). I call it "The New Popular Sound", A. Because it sounds cool. B. Because this is not "Rock" per se, but rather a Pop with grander ambitions than the traditional rock set up. It's rock music made with a "Pet Sounds" ambition. Bands that attempt this still know and love whole albums, have a fierce earnestness. I like "Soft Bulletin" as an example, because it was so earnest and un-cynical, and the approach to melody was unconventional at first. Now it's a stone cold classic. Mogger Zen Pop posts a lot on these type of bands
