Help Me Get This Ear Worm Outta My Head! Name That Tune...

Posted about 1 year ago
Hey Mog, Sorry I've been so distant lately, but CBW's world has been put on shuffle, and he's just trying to keep the family running while the wife has been outta commission with a knee injury. I still think about you, and have read and responded to scant posts, but it's just been so hard lately.
So I need a favor, moggers. I was in Ross yesterday, looking for shoes for my son, and the in store radio was playing music that I'm sure the employees didn't pick - Sufjan Stephens "Decatur" and other "indie" bands, that just didn't seem like the sales clerks taste in music.
One particular tune stuck out as familiar, but I couldn't place it. Almost sounded a little like the Gorillaz (but perhaps The Good, The Bad, The Queen) in its sound. The singer could have been a British bloke, but it was hard to tell whether he had an accent or not. The song consisted of a melody wrapped around a very catchy whistling melody, that I still can't get out of my head. I'm sure I've heard it somewhere recently, on either Mog or a commercial, but I gotta find out who it is.
I've been scanning my mind for some recent raves here on mog - bands like Black Kids, or Vampire Weekend, but haven't found it yet. So help a mogger out, post it, give me the info!Thanks,CBW_UPDATE_ Earworm solved by Fistula Spume! Thanks Fisty!

  4. fistula spume says Sorry to hear about your wife's knee. Hope all gets better. I've been pretty busy myself this year but have found more time for Mog lately. Comes and goes. There must be some hipster store manager at Ross. I know when I worked at a movie theater I was in total control of the cd player and all of our patrons had to listen to Fistula Spume mixes. Poor souls.

  5. contrabandwidth says God bless you. Nailed it on the head. I did just listen to a bunch of 30 second clips of Vampire Weekend's album, and now I want that too. This song is infectious.

  6. fistula spume says It's crazy infectious. My wife played it for a good 6 months straight. That Vampire Weekend album is awesome. Been listening to that for a while now thanks to Max. Also thanks (or not) to AA Coppertop I cannot get this damn song out of my head.

  7. contrabandwidth says I don't know what's up with the comments as of late, but they are on shuffle too. I really don't think the manager was a hipster, she looked about 60. The sales staff didn't even seem to notice the music (as I would be bopping a long if I had chosen the tunes). Man, I'm sure you played some great, yet bizarre mixes. If I had that job I probably would have played John Zorn's "Naked City" just to keep people away. I can be a bit of a misanthrope.

  8. contrabandwidth says Scnappi, Schnappi, Schnappi...how twisted, and thanks for sticking that one in my head. Where's Miki when you need her translation services? Speaking of which, I have not seen a post from her for a long while...

  11. contrabandwidth says I was whistling it as I walked into the next store, and their entry way had the most wonderful acoustics that really did my whistling justice! Sounded just like the recording!

  13. fistula spume says I haven't hear from her since before X-Mas. Seems like I sent her a message last month but didn't get a reply. Hope she's doing well. I was wondering what her take on it was. On Wikipedia it says it hit #1 in Germany and several other European countries. I've been walking around for two days now saying "schnappi schnappi schnap". It's kind of brightened my mood actually.

  14. contrabandwidth says Way to go Troy! I never knew you spoke German! You learn something every day. I'm gonna go get some of my Krautrock albums and get you to translate them :).

  15. TroyPowers says Lived in Germany for 5 years. Yeah, this was pretty popular for a while. What can I say? Germans are a strange bunch. It's a kids song, that somehow hit the mainstream. This isn't so bad though. They had this annoying ass frog that started out as a ringtone and ended up with his own album once. Bizarre people over there.

  16. TroyPowers says From Wikipedia: Crazy Frog is an animated character used in the marketing of a ring tone based on The Annoying Thing, a computer animation created by Erik Wernquist. Marketed by the ringtone provider Jamba!, the animation was originally created to accompany a sound effect produced by Daniel Malmedahl while attempting to imitate the sound of a two-stroke moped engine. The Crazy Frog spawned a worldwide hit single with a remix of "Axel F", which reached the number one spot in the United Kingdom, Japan, Turkey, New Zealand, Australia and most of Europe. The subsequent album Crazy Frog Presents Crazy Hits and second single "Popcorn" also enjoyed worldwide chart success, and a second album entitled Crazy Frog Presents More Crazy Hits was released in 2006. The Crazy Frog has also spawned a range of merchandise and toys, and two video games, all of which were very popular for Christmas 2005.

  17. contrabandwidth says Hey, I'm like half German and I still don't get it. Though I do know how to spot a German tourist anywhere in the world. Anytime I see a person with very vibrant colored shoes or clothing that doesn't match the other parts of their out fit, has a very "european" looking back pack, or is pretty much doing what ever they want in a foreign land (and they don't speak English), I pretty much can figure, their German. You know if I had to (in good fun) paint an entire culture with a broad stroke...

  18. TroyPowers says Man, watch your mouth. Germans are EVERYWHERE. I was in a furniture store in a small town in Ohio, and heard people speaking German. Was at a famous soul food restaraunt in Harlem...German family at the next table. Standing in line at Duane Reed, behind me a girl from Nuernberg complaining that her English wasn't good enough. In their defense, the percentage of Americans that go to Germany without speaking a lick of German has got to be exponentially higher than the other way around. Oh, and I think the ringtone only started in Germany. Crazy Frog had hits all across Europe. U.K.? Yup, they loved Crazy Frog. Schnappi is actually cool though. It's hilarious for that video to come on TV and see a grown ass man yell "SCHNAPPI!", like his favorite song just came on.

  25. FluxCapacitor says "CBW 's world has been put on shuffle" - great expression. Glad you found the song, it can drive you crazy when you can't find the name of the tune rattling around in your head. Btw, I referenced this song in my Hot Chip review header last week, "We Don't Care About The Young Folks".

  26. fistula spume says I just had to come back and say isn't it strange that the Germans invented "ear worm" and they provided us with Schnappi? Coincidence?!
