File this one will fall under the two year old post clause.
Originally a trio of Robert Wyatt, Mike Ratledge, and Kevin Ayers. The band eventually swelled to as many as 7 members, even playing for a short while as a quartet with future Police guitarist Andy Summers.
Contempories of Pink Floyd through Joe Boyd's UFO Club. They were one of Britains first psychedlic bands, and opened for The Jimi Hendrix Experience on their US tour through the states, in which they became more popular there than in England, leading their first album to be released in the States only.
The band had huge jazz leanings which can be heard in their later albums like Fourth, in which Wyatt wasn't even a member anymore. But another clear example of a band expanding and evolving their sound in a short ammount of time.

Yeah, c.b.w.! These guys have always been in my wheelhouse - no matter how out-there and jagged they got. And the solo stuff? Mmm-mmm good.
the French for "Soft Machine" is "Machine Molle" - hencve the name of Robert Wyatt's next project being Matching Mole
Yeah Mikee, me too! I grabbed a track and ended up listening to the whole album. Might have just re-awakened a new respect for Soft Machine.
Baudolino - you're always a beacon of reliable information, that's a great piece of trivia, thanks!
