Tastes Like Chicken - Cannibalism in Song

Posted 6 months ago

Ah, the love song. A staple of the pop song. Food, another favorite, but a little less represented in the annals of the pop lexicon. But what happens when the love of a person short circuits, and the infatuation and hunger beget the deepest, most unmentionable of human faults - the desire to eat the one you love - or perhaps, just the one your trapped on a dessert island (etc.) with.

So when the civilised line is crossed, and you find yourself in some sort of Joseph Conrad situation, your buddy and your buddy is looking a little more like a fine steak, then this post is for you.

Many thanks to Scotfree's Post for inspiring what could appear to be a deliciou - er... interesting thread. Please post your canabalism related songs in the comments below, and read Scotfree's post while your at it.

Did I mention Alfred Packer, his story was made into a musical.. by Trey Parker, it had previously been a stage play (different script) called Alfred Packer:A Colorado Ritual-I only know this 'cause my pops directed it.

wiki:Folksinger Phil Ochs composed a song about Packer's life, included on "The Broadside Tapes 1". Singer C.W. McCall wrote (with Chip Davis) and sang a song about Packer called "Comin' Back for More." It was included on his 1999 release The Real McCall: An American Storyteller.

Death metal band Cannibal Corpse's 1990 debut, Eaten Back To Life is dedicated to Packer with the inscription "This Album is dedicated to the memory of Alfred Packer, The First American Cannibal (R.I.P.)"

Perhaps I know too much about this subject..

this is really weird, last night on my way home from work I threw in a mix I had not listened to in ages. I had no idea what music was on it, and this song came in on track number three. I think I listened to it four times before moving on, god I miss this band

I do believe that this would be an ideal place to mention the band the Donner Party.

No serious discussion of this topic can be undertaken without mentioning the 1971 piece of shit hit single by those one-hot wonders, The Buoys, "Timothy."  The lyrics follow:

Trapped in a mine that had caved in
And everyone knows the only ones left
Were Joe and me and Tim
When they broke through to pull us free
The only ones left to tell the tale
    Were Joe and me

Timothy, Timothy, where on earth did you go?
Timothy, Timothy, God why don't I know?

Hungry as hell no food to eat
And Joe said that he would sell his soul
For just a piece of meat
Water enough to drink for two
And Joe said to me, "I'll have a swig
And then there's some for you."

Timothy, Timothy, Joe was looking at you
Timothy, Timothy, God what did we do?

I must have blacked out just around then
'Cause the very next thing that I could see
Was the light of the day again
My stomach was full as it could be
    And nobody ever got around
    To finding Timothy
    Timothy...
This poignant vignette was penned by none other than Rupert Holmes, perpetrator of "The Pina Colada Song" among other felonies. Someday he may get his own special edition Toxic Tuesday....
