MELT-PROOF AND SCRATCH-RESISTANT

What The Kids Are Listening To

Posted 7 months ago

Being a "Work at Home" dad, I find myself having little time to follow up on some favorite past times/ time kills. I've got a million posts in my head, but just thought I'd drop in and do a post aon some notes I took about what caught my kids ears.

My wife is a big fan of Pandora and this has instituted a "thumbs up/ thumbs down" rating system in my children, well mainly my son. My boy is 3 1/2 and my daughter is 1 1/2. I'm not quite sure how I feel about this, since Sesame Street and Thomas The Tank Engine Songs always rank highest in his ears, it has garnered some unwaranted judgements of my own music.

But, shuffling iTunes one night I was tickled by the songs that I found my son litteraly turning up the stereo to.

The Buzzcocks - "I Believe"

I got a kick out of this one, because it was a lot longer than your average Buzzcocks song. We later found out he loved it because he thought that Pete Shelley was singing "Moe" in the song (the name of one of his friends).

The Melodians - "Rivers of Babylon

Not surprising since I used to sing this to him every night at bedtime. He always likes the sadder songs, go figure. It is beautiful none-the-less.

The Baha Men - "Can You Move It Like This?"

Not a favorite of mine in the least, but it's one of those songs like "The Electric Slide" that appeals to the masses, and 3 year olds alike.

"Dirty Mind" - Prince

Sorry no vid for this one. I often feel a twinge of guilt for letting my kids listen to Prince, but it soon subsides, because the music is good. I don't play things like "Sexy M.F." for them, but I also realize that the kids don't really know what he's singing about, much less things like the context of his euphemisms.

Tinga Stewart & Ninja Man - "Cover Me"

I can't tell you much about this other than it's from my favorite box set "The Story of Jamacain Music", as I'm not the biggest Dancehall fan. I did get a kick out of the kids dancing around the living room to it.

Every morning I drive my 6 year old to school, and we take turns each day picking the music.  I play a lot of things, she basically chooses the same three things over and over.  Either the Dixie Chicks, Freezepop, or Kraftwerk (she loves "The Robots").  I actually like all three of them, even the Chicks, but I'm starting to get tired of the same stuff!

"Rivers of Babylon" (or Psalm 137 as it was originally titled) dates from around 540 BC, towards the end of the enslavement of the Jewish people following the seizure of Jerusalem by the Babylonians in 586 BC. It is the oldest song ever to become a chart hit.

"Cover Me" was written by Marlin Greene and hard-living country boy Eddie hinton, and originally cut by Percy Sledge in 1967 or so. The Bold One/Ninjaman cut was produced by Lloyd "Pickout" Dennis in 1988, and was the first Jamaican dancehall hit to feature a singer and a deejay jointly credited in combinaton format in a style that is now commonplace.

I love what kids dig because they have no filter - it hits the spot or doesn't. And they always show great breadth. The 13 year old is still into African and Cuban music she locked onto almost from day 1.
