WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Down the Musical Wormhole, A different kind of Under The Covers Sunday

Posted over 2 years ago
The idea of this post is to try to create a musical path or mix of certain elements (cover, sample, or auditory minutiae that can connect the tracks) of a song and see how far you can go with it. This is a test of your music geekiness, so rack your brains and see if you can add to the post.
For example I'm starting with Aimee Man's cover of Harry Nilssons ??One?? which will be followed by The Beta Bands ??Won?? which uses a crucial sample from that song to construct their song. Now maybe you would post the 3 Dog Night version of the song or something seemingly related.
I am basically interested to see how far this can take people - like when you search for something on the internet and end up somewhere completely different then what you started with. Feel free to explain your choice or just post in the comments below.

  3. walkingthecow says i have to admit the first time i heard aimee mann i totally hated her. don't worry, i now am in love with her work. i have since revisited the magnolia soundtrack, a suggestion from a friend, and it is brilliant.

  4. Mike the Knife says No time like the present for a rediscovery, reconsideration and reestablishment of Nilsson's brilliance as a composer, singer and interpreter. I get chills sometimes when I hear his voice. Chills.

  5. Sam The Artist says intriguing... so would a song have to contain similar artist/sounds or lyrics that are some what the same? because obviously, the 3 dog night cover would be the next logical choice, but i wouldnt want to be that predictable. after hearing "won" i instantly thought of living legends track "rabbit hole" because not only is it a hip hop track, but they sample from jefferson airplane's "white rabbit" where they say "ONE pill makes you larger, and ONE pill make you small." idk, it might be a long shot! then again, there the cowsill's "the rain, the park, and other things" which sounds fairly similar and they were also pretty huge in the sixties.

  6. contrabandwidth says Nice. You get it. Great choice. I see your Rabbit hole and raise you ??One??. Argh! Mogs wonky and wont upload. But I will post Iron Horse's cover of "One" from the album "Fade To Bluegrass: The Bluegrass Tribut to Metallica" So in the mean time, sing the song with a bit of a twang in your voice and you kind of get it....

  7. darmuzz says There's a bluegrass tribute to Metallica? I thought Apocalyptica had differently-instrumented Metallica covered!

  10. Bartleby says Sorry Contra, I think I broke the chain of your impeccable "six degrees" of Harry Nilsson. It's shame really because I love his song writing.

  11. contrabandwidth says Hey, it's okay, the rules aren't that specific. I actually thought of this one too, and think it works nicely. The point is to take it to some other place through some twisted path of thought. I see it as a the final post being a non-sequiter. Like you could see the final being something like, i don't know, ??Sunshine Superman??, and then everything in between some how led us to that. I'm still trying to figure out some rules - kinda like the 6 degrees game, but I just like what each song leads people to think. Thanks for your post!

  12. Dzendvokh says I'm going back to the Nilson/Aimee Mann cover. Beautiful song, have always loved Mann's version, and was never familiar with the original. Here's Bill Frisell's version of Neil Young's "One of these Days", I think there's a relationship in more than just the "One" in the title, i could analyze it but i'd rather not. Plus it's a cover, like Mann's.

  13. Dzendvokh says And now to provide a couple of forks
    Permalink posted 11/04/2007
  14. Dzendvokh says Ok Contra, let's see where I can go, the next track has a relationship (at least in my mind) with one of the forks I posted above, I won't tell which one and why, maybe people can suss that out on their own. And this one follows through obvious association

  15. Groon says And to take the Dr. Who thing longer, here's The Timelords (aka The KLF) with their songs about the intrepid time traveler: And to flash back to the original title going around, here's a song called "One" by the Bee Gees. And I don't care what you say about them, the Brothers Gibb could write some seriously great songs. This is one of my favorites:

  16. contrabandwidth says Well played Dzendvokh, plenty of forks indeed. For the Doctor Who fork via Groons post I offer this: Followed by this:

  17. contrabandwidth says As for your Neil Young fork I offer you this Emmylou Harris's cover of Young's ??Wrecking Ball?? Gillian Welch's:

Which leads me to Gillian Welch's track of the same name but it is actually a different song:

and that leads me back to the Emmylou harris cover of Gillian Welch's ??Orphan Girl??:

Which leads me back to the original by Ms. Welch herself:

Damn, now this is really getting fun!

  18. Dzendvokh says I'll see your Orphan Girl and raise you a Whiskey Girl, this is what happens to Orphan Girl who loses her faith. Uncle Tupelo illustrates the latter path perfectly: A long way from happiness In a three-hour-away town Whiskey bottle over Jesus Not forever, just for now Not forever, just for now

  19. contrabandwidth says I take that whiskey, and I throw it down the well:
Jump, I say! Jump yer Blues!

  20. contrabandwidth says I know who threw it in the well, The Gin Soaked Boy!
    Permalink posted 11/04/2007
  21. Dzendvokh says Mog seems to have eaten this one, so here it goes again, the other fork:

  23. contrabandwidth says From the KLF tip o' the fork I give you The Shamen w/ Terence McKenna ??Re:Evolution?? and a live version just for kicks:
    Permalink posted 11/05/2007
  24. contrabandwidth says As for your other fork, you've brought me southbound with your drunkenness:
    Permalink posted 11/05/2007
  25. Dzendvokh says I'm takin you right back to Nilsson with this fork, but I don't have the final piece...you know what it is?
    Permalink posted 11/06/2007
  26. contrabandwidth says All I can come think of right now is "The Flying Saucer Song" on Nilssons ??Pussycats?? - The album was produced by Lennon and sticks with that sort of outer space theme. Which I'll have to post later (if I actually have it). I think I've thought of some rules for this game that may make it a little more concise, but no less fun. I'll post about it and see if we can make something out of this. This has been fun, thanks for indulging me and helping me follow my whims!

  27. Dzendvokh says pussycats is what I was thinkin
    Permalink posted 11/06/2007
  28. contrabandwidth says High five! Nice way to bring it home! I'm thinking for the game you should find a way to bring "The Wormhole back to the surface, and this works nicely. Now to figure out how to bring the country fork back...
