Let's Fuck With Mog-matic - A Social Networking Experiment...

Posted over 2 years ago
Cheating in life is an inevitable fact. I am always fascinated by how technology embeds itself in our life, offers to free us from the social constraints of society, and level the playing field - making all voices equal. Kind of Utopian isn't it? Well, online and in the world of technology, it at least starts out that way until someone finds away to cheat the system or work it to their advantage. Be it people cheating click-through advertising, online gamers using mods to pwn their opponents, or the Chinese Gold Farmers that have established themselves on games like "World Of Warcraft", cheating is as much the human condition as the desire to interact.
In honor of Barry Bonds 756th Home run, let's knock Smashing Pumpkins out of the top slot with a previously un-listed "Top Artist This Month"So here is what I propose:
I have noticed that for the mog-o-matic to record the songs I have played, I only have to start the song in iTunes, for it to register on my mog page. This also works for your iPod as well (iTunes will record the number of times your iPod has played a song into the play count section of iTunes, which mog-o-matic picks up and uses for its "recently played" and for the "Top Songs This Week/Month") So this got me thinking about how the mog-o-matic must record the information from iTunes (this is all speculation, which is why this is an experiment).
If mog-o-matic records the information of what is playing at the moment as a "Songs Recently Played/Top songs This Week/Month" than theoretically, the most popular songs on everyones Mog page (Top Songs this Week/Month) gets tallied into the mog Top Artist of the Month category at the bottom of the page (although I'm sure people's posts, with MP3's, on said artist help too).
So the best way I can think of conducting this experiment is to get everyne on the same page:Step 1 - Download this free MP3 from iTunes (Artist: Bat For Lashes Song:Horse and I Album:Fur and Gold. You can find it on the iTunes home page under "Free on iTunes).*(I will update this to another more accessible MP3, if someone can find it - must legally be free. No Torrents of Limewire stuff).Step 2 - add to you iTunes library. Play the song, learn to love it or stick it on repeat and turn off the volume.Step 3 - make a Mog post. Title it the "Mog Social Networking Experiment - [your name]" and tag it with experiment, mog-o-matic. Fill in artist information, etc. as you would for any other post.Step 4 - Upload song into post.Step 5 - Link back to this post.I'll update this post with any further info on the ranking of the song. Remember this experiment takes as many people as possible, doing as many plays of the song as possible. So if you are sick of the song, put it on repeat when you go to lunch and turn off the sound. This is the web equivalent of an artist coming out of nowhere and burning up the chart. I've actually listened to the song, and I must say it's pretty good. Let's give this artist a boost, who knows, we may have just helped others discover a new artist. (I have seen that fellow moggers have already pushed this artist, my choice was one out of necessity and price (free), but I am pleasantly surprised, none the less).

  1. Kate says Good choice. I saw Bat For Lashes play last week in SF. They kicked some serious, glittery ass.

  2. contrabandwidth says Yeah, you'd think the amount of time I spent here, I would remember all the posts, but I missed it. I want to hear more.

  3. Dale says Anything that gets Bat for Lashes more love is a good thing, Fur and Gold is excellent.

  4. contrabandwidth says Great, then play it! I'll be checking in on your mog page and coming down with some strict discipline for those who don't obey! MMmwah-ha-ha!

  5. 1234chainsaw says I like the concept of breaking lesser known artists. But I'm one of those who like neither Microsoft nor Apple and so don't use iTunes.

  6. contrabandwidth says Well, try it with what ever your mog-o-matic is connected too. The point is to see if we can drive the artist on to the mog chart. Since it records the song as played when it starts, you can "cheat" by repeating the song without even finishing it, which should record it as recently played. Maybe make a playlist of the song, and leave your computer while it plays over and over again.

  7. debi says Excellent song choice to start the experiment - new music to me and a tune I actually want to listen to more than once (and you can check my mog recently played to see so!) I also didn't know iTunes had more than one free tune a week - I always check the free single of the week but now will look for more free tuneage.

  8. Bartleby says

Bat For Lashes is one of my nominated gems of 2006.

I bought the album last year and fell and still remain in love with Natasha Khan's lyricism. Maybe I should post a note on my "repeat" song from Fur And Gold

  10. Augusts1 says I'm perfectly happy Smashing Pumpkins is at the top of the list since I love them, so I won't be participating. But good luck w/your plan.

  11. darmuzz says Mog-o-Matic not working for those of us who upgraded to iTunes 7.3

  12. contrabandwidth says August1 - You don't understand, it's not about whether or not SP (not a favorite of mine) is on the top or whether Bob Dylan is (a favorite), it's about seeing if my speculations work. I just want to see if everyone participating could help crack the Mog chart with an artist who isn't on it. I just picked (by luck and chance) an interesting artist. I want to see if my theories of how mog-o-matic compiles our data is correct. And in the meantime, maybe we expose some new people to an new artist, since this will register on hypemachine and google and such. darmuzz - unfortunate. glad I didn't upgrade. If your ??really feeling in the spirit?? you could try another mog-o-matic supported player. But I don't really want anyone to go to to much trouble, since this is just for fun.
