I spent the summer of '99 in Italy. It was incredible, and a few albums were great to listen to, to just escape the tiring nature of travel. I enjoyed Underworld's ??Second Toughest in the Infant's??, but something about ??Beaucoup Fish?? just had a throbbing, humming, intense life of it's own. The lyrics sometimes hit me, coming off as an almost scattered free form delivery, but somehow when they settled in my brain with the warm soup of music pulsing through my earphones, it all made sense. This was traveling music. This was what you listened too while watching millions of buildings housing millions you don't understand fly by.
Not being a dancer, I have never been a huge fan of club music (and I wouldn't consider underworld "club music" in the likes of the dreaded "House Music" in which I find un-listenable) this album's beats and rhythms are more "living" music than dance. When the Electronica genre was being described by those making its music, I certainly had my preconceptions of what dance music was shattered when I could enjoy listening to music that others would dance to.
I have not heard anything from Underworld since this album, perhaps because it is so special to me, I fear being disappointed. But even listening to it now, it still feels vibrant and as alive as it did when I'd slip it on all those years ago.
