MUSIC CHATTER AND MATTER

African Tuesday from Ethiopia and the UK

Posted 11 months ago

I'm still trying to find my way with this album. That said, I am definitely intrigued. Apparently it was recorded in a rudimentary studio in Addis Adaba and then finished in the UK with Nick Page from Temple of Sound. "Ambassel" represents, for me, a middle ground between the dubbier tracks on the album and those that feature more of the Azamari vocals and instrumentation (Serious Dub fans should check out "Entoto"). Fellow Mogger Vannatta did a cool remix of another track from the album, "Sima Eddy", and posted it here.

Hmmm...interesting, aye, but I'm not sure on first exposure. Sounds a bit like a 1970s style Mahmoud Ahmed backing track, with a newish female vocal and a fair degree of overdubbing, which changes the rhythmic emphasis a bit. whether it deserves to be filed under "groundbreaking fusion" or "worthwhile experiment, not to be repeated", is perhaps a question for another day.

I hear you.  I'm not sure whether any of the album will really resonate and become a perpetual "go-to" or whether it's just a passing fancy.  Funny, though, your comments were similar to those that I came across in a Popmatters review here.

Oh, and I just realized I misspelled azmari, by adding an extra "A"
