Troubadour Shows

Yellowcard had this exclusive two-day event at the Troubadour. One night would be played totally acoustic and the other would be played electric. It was a “gamble” as to which night they were going to do either, but one could guess that on the night where one dude was playing was the acoustic set and the night where a band opened meant electric. Day one – While in the car I guessed that it was going to be electric and I was right! Kristin and I were right there, in all the action. There was this annoying pair of skinny Asian girls sweating profusely and getting on everyone’s nerves. The music was amazing though. I didn’t even listen to Lights and Sounds, to be honest, but that show really made me want to listen to it. I’m also really looking forward to their new album because the songs sounded amazing. There were these crazy guitar riffs that were a little non-YC of them, but still showed their growth. Their show really captured where they’ve been for the past 7ish years and made everyone excited for the future. Ryan ended with an acoustic version of Rough Draft and promised that he wouldn’t play it tomorrow night [which turned out to be a big fat lie]. It was also pretty cool to hear Avondale live. Day two – I met a dude from Philadelphia in line who flew all the way to Los Angeles just to see Yellowcard. That’s dedication. Sean from Reeve Oliver opened. He’s a funny guy. It was a bummer since his band sucks [sorry dude] and the crowd didn’t know any of his songs. He did treat us to a lovely rendition of Stay by Lisa Loeb and the splash zone song from Sea World. Oh, I should also note that he was wearing some chic glasses during Stay to pull the whole look together. Very nice touch. I think he made about $5 in cash that night too; the crowd was apparently feeling very generous. The YC acoustic set was accompanied by a bigger string section and a piano. The stage was also adorned with flowers and fake candlesticks. Songs I didn’t think they would play but they did anyway included Firewater [which apparently they have never played live before], Big Apple Heartbreak, and Gifts and Curses. It would have been nice to hear Cigarette since it would have fit perfectly with their acoustic set and I have no clue why they chose to overlook it. Someone shouted On The Brink, but they will probably never play that song. I’m also surprised they didn’t play Powder on either day. Here are a few pictures.
