D-dun d-dun d-dun, the letter D is coming to a town near you (or maybe just a feeble-minded blog)! What rabbits do we have to pull out of our hats today? Well little bunny foo foo's which were considered, but ultimately rejected like Bea Arthur at a nudist colony were: The Dresden Dolls, Danny Elfman, David Bowie, and The Decemberists. Ultimately, The Distillers [http://www.thedistillers.com/] captured my furry little fancies. Originally formed by leading vocalist (though you may question her gender by the sound) Brody Dalle in 1998, The Distillers is now mostly a two person team affair between her and one Tony Bradley. Don't take the changeup of members in this band to mean their inability to take root, though, or as a vulnerability in their music. A punk band in the true sense of the word, they follow in the footsteps of early punkers. Very popular abroad, The Distillers have been touring with only small breaks and breaks for recording since their formation. Ryan Sinn played bass in the band, but left recently to persue a career with Angels & Airwaves. Almost every member that has passed through is now part of another band or has a solo career, but back to The Distillers themselves--gutsy lyrics and singing from the stomach make this a punk-rock dream. The simple, but not simplified, guitar riffs make it a musician's treat. Brody's voice is perfect for this music, without being harsh or overly forced. Just enough edge to show she is bad-ass, Brody Dalle embodies her music (she should, since she wrote or so-wrote every song on every album).
For a sense of sound, imagine Hole if Courtney Love had talent. Suggested tracks include "Dismantle Me", "The Hunger", "Hall of Mirrors", "beat your Heart Out", and "Sick of it All". Any questions?
