Album review: Geri X signs a cross across my heart again with 'The Bedroom Sessions'
-
Artist:
Having seen geri X perform live numerous times in different cities, I was excited to hear that
1 ghost Face" kicks the album off in a pop-ier direction that I generally invision the folkish Geri X., but it does not lose any of her flavor. This eill be a fun song to sing along to. The flow reminds me a bit of Rilo Kiley. The more I listen to this song, the more I really like it. ****
2 "Above the Bed" carries a steady beat I can imagine driving to already. I love how light her voice is. It feels so natural for her to be singing this and I think a lot of that is a real honesty coming through the music. ****
3 "Modest Mouse" slows it down for us a touch. These are the types of songs where Geri's lyrical mastery can really shine. There is a nice rolling guitar lick that makes this song pretty groovy. This one has a real yearning to it. I would give it a perfect score, but it has a breakdown that is just a little too long for my tastes. Still, I like this one a lot. ****.5
4 "Kiss on Both Eyelids" is a reworking of a song from the previous album, 'Anthems of a Mended Heart'. I LOVE the new intro for this. She comes zooming up to your ears and it is immediately infectious. like the original version of this song, this is the sort of tune that makes you want to bop around a room because you just like someone that much. The drums are a little softened from the original, and it meshes better with the more studio-balanced vocals. Was a good song, is still a good song. I like the rework. ****.5
5 "Falling Through", like track 3, has a nice groovy guitar lick throughout it. This one is a bit more involved and is some very nice picking. The mood here is a bit more pensive, but Geri X has always had a knack for the songs that pluck at your heart strings. I probably need to listen to this one when I'm in a quiet dragon mood to really appreciate it. I don't hate it, but it isn't my favorite song on the album. ***
6 "Monument" is another re-do from 'Anthems of a mended Heart' and it makes sense that they would try to take advantage of the full production ability and to bring back a few songs old fans may know as they hit the road on their first national tour. This one comes back more sycopated than the original. It wasn't my favorite song the first time around (which isn't to say I didn't like it, I just had so many songs I loved from her otherwise), but I can dig it. ***.75
7 "Ok. Go." is the type of song us scene kids can really step our feet around in place to. The song lacks a bit of substance, but it is a fun listen. ***
8 "When I Die" is one of my favorite Geri X songs. the first time I had heard it was live, in her back yard as the grilling and mingling carried on. Everyone went silent and the song gave me goosebumps. It was mesmerizing. On Anthems of a Mended Heart, it was very simple and thumping. This one is more direct, more insistent. It has been sped up slightly, but the backbeat remains and the music fills up the empty space. I like it a lot, but I like it differently than I did the original. ****.5
9 "You're Half Mine" Geri X tackles a duet here with who I assume to be Matt Sigallos. I love how smooth the voices feel and how on the verge of a revelation. This is a great song, and I think I will only like it more as time goes on and I give it a few more listens. This is my mother's favorite song from the album, and the song that has finally turned her as an official Geri X fan. ****.5
10 "You're a Pearl" was the song that turned me on as a Geri X fan. In fact, it was the first song by her I had ever heard. A friend of mine was plucking around on her guitar one afternoon as we sipped tea in her upstairs apartment. Suddenly, she broke into a tune, and started singing this. I set my tea to rest on the table and leaned in, elbows in the knees to really listen. I was blown away. I demanded to know the song. She played it for me and it inspired me to see Geri X live for the first time. The original version was on Can't Make You Happy, which was also the first album I purchased of hers. I bought it from her mother. It was great, but it sounded like it was mixed in a closet. This version does not feel overdone. The background singing brings a longing that balances out the rawness adding more background music to a song like this can really remove. Still a wonderful love song for the brokenhearted. *****
11 "Blackbird" I thoroughly enjoy the picking on this album, and especially this song. This song has the heaviness I expect from Geri's music (even though it strays in tone from the folk sound and could be considered--dare I Say--downright electric)and it shows off the uniqueness off her tone. *****
12 "Goodbye" On a final note (and as I am ever running out of time), this songs rounds off the album now. It is a very appropriate song for the end. It isn't a goodbye to something going, so much as to soemthing being turned away. The reigning lyric, "I never want to see you again" will have to deal with the fact that I'm going to listen to this song again next time I hear the album. And then again. And again. Halfway through, this is discussed a bit. Nice touch. ***.75
Overall, I really liked this album. I only gave it a once over, listen to a few songs over again, but mostly I wanted to give you guys an idea. Now go buy it, or see her out on tour!
